1 What is Volume? volume

2 Let us find the area of the rectangle below:
If we count the squares inside the rectangle, the area is = 50 squares.

3 What is Volume? Before we define volume, let us try to define the following terms; Prism: a prism is a three- dimensional figure. Example: Cube: a cube is a regular prism with face that are square.

4 Now! Let’s do the following activities so that we can define the term Volume.
Step 1: Try to identify the container (cube of cuboid) Step 2: Let us find the area of the base by counting the unit squares. Area = 48 squares Step 3: Recall the formula to find the area of a rectangle. Length x width Is height a factor when finding area? Is height important when finding volume The volume of a cuboid can be found by counting the cubes that that is used to fill it up. Let us do an experiment to see how it works.

5 1. State what is length? 2. Identify the different lengths on the cuboid. 3. State the amount of cubes which are packed along the length of the cuboid. 4. State the amount of cubes which are packed along the width of the cuboid. 5. State the amount of cubes which are packed along the height of the cuboid. State the total amount of cubes which are packed on the base of the cuboid.

6 1 Volume = 144 cubes

7 Now! Can you tell the meaning of volume?
The volume of a three – dimensional figure is the number of cubic units needed to fill the space inside the figure. A cube unit is a cube with edges one unit long. Example

8 Can you tell the formula to find the volume of a cube or cuboid?
The area of the rectangle = length x width. Is there a change in height when finding volume? Very good you are correct (the answer is yes). If height is a factor when finding volume, what do you think is the formula for calculating volume. Volume of a cube = length x width x height (or area of base x height)

9 What are the units used for measuring volume?
1mm 1mm x 1mm x1mm = 1mm^3 1cm 1cm x1cm x 1cm = 1cm^3 1m 1m x 1m x 1m = 1m^3
