5 FOCUS AREAS FOR SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS & NEEDS ASSESSMENT (SANA)
AIR POLLUTION & HEALTH POLICY AS AN IMPORTANT CROSS-CUTTING ISSUE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY & HEALTH CLIMATE CHANGE & HEALTH

6 Objectives – Planning Phase
Exploratory planning steps to establish a GEOHealth Hub for Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda. To conduct Situational Analysis and Needs Assessments on three targeted areas; indoor and outdoor air quality, occupational health and safety; and climate change. Assessment of key stakeholder activities, and an inventory of training, research, policy and outreach capacity. Foster partnerships within/between the Eastern African and US partners to strengthen training, research and policy making activities

7 Planning Phase: Mechanism
Weekly teleconferences on key issues Reciprocal visits between US and East African (e.g., AAU) partners Dedicated national teams organized by themes Lively exchanges of documents and instruments between teams Active engagement by major stakeholders Visits to regional partner countries Dissemination of SANA documents Preparations towards the full hub

8 Progress: Workshops Inception meeting at AAU (Dec., 2012)

35 Discussion of SANA Reports

36 What is SANA? A systematic process for conducting analysis of the prevailing situation and assessment of needs and priorities Situational Analysis (SA) Critical review of published/grey literature Assessment of current situation on research, policy and physical/human capacity Needs Assessment (NA) Identification/prioritization of critical gaps in the scientific evidence based on the SA Prioritization of training and policy needs based on national agenda

37 Discussion Points Situational Analysis (by theme)
Similarities/differences between countries regarding Quantity/quality of local research Status on policy availability and implementation Status on physical/human capacity Needs Assessment (by theme) Critical gaps in the local scientific evidence Critical gaps in relevant skilled manpower Critical gaps in available policies and enforcement mechanisms Priorities in addressing critical gaps based on national /regional agenda

38

39 The Full GEOHealth Hub application and Overall Discussion

40 Proposed Full Hub Structure

41 Objectives and Setup of Full Hub
Two linked applications focusing on Research (U01) and Training (U2R) Tiered Research Approach Air Pollution as the main theme East African Children’s Health (EACH) Studies Daily time-series on morbidity/mortality counts Occupational Health/Climate Change as Pilots Heat Stress as a focus Training Mechanism Initial focus on lead scientists Interwoven with research activities Mixed approach: On-ground and Distance techniques

42 Research Setup and Timeline

43 Aims of the Training component (U2R)
Immersion for Lead Scientists in research, curriculum development, and policy three separate cohorts for training in the US at USC, UW-M and SC-AQMD (Yrs 1,3,5) follow-up training through distance-based approaches, workshops, and mentored research experience. Curriculum development for training in exposure assessment, research methods and health assessment Targeted training for research teams (Yrs 1-3) in exposure assessment, respiratory disease research methods, and health assessment To expand program through dissemination at national and regional levels via Workshops and sharing of curriculum –including on-line curricula, research mentorships and academic degree programs to reach across the region. To develop case-based and other approaches for translating research findings into policies, regulations and other actions by working with appropriate stakeholders

44 How to Move Forward (If funded)
Need to act fast, once funding decisions are made: Set-up of admin structure Set-up of research teams Launching of training activities Head start on research productivity

45 While we wait… Finalize remaining SANA towards publication
Push publications towards completion Pursue other complementary funding opportunities
