Leukemia An estimate reveals over 327,520 people in the U.S. are living with Leukemia. In India leukemia is ranked among the list of top cancers affecting Indians.
2
What is leukemia? Leukemia is a type of blood cancer caused by the abnormal rapid formation of White Blood Cells (WBCs) in the blood that obstructs the formation of Red Blood Cells (RBCs) and platelets required for immunity in the body. 2
3
If a person has Leukemia…
He/she can easily get caught by any infection (viral, bacterial, or other microorganism) Can even easily bruised or bleed excessively 3
4
Types of Leukemia Based on type of White Blood Cell (WBC) affected:
Lymphocytic Leukemia(affects lymphocytes of lymphatic tissue that makes up your immune system) Myelogenous Leukemia (affects myeloid cells that form RBCs, WBCs, and platelet-producing cells) Based on how fast it spreads in body: Acute Leukemia (attacks the body suddenly, requires immediate treatment) Chronic Leukemia (grows slowly over the months) 4
5
Why did I get Leukemia? Exposure to radiations
There is actually no specific known cause of leukemia but yes suspected causes given by researchers are: Exposure to radiations Exposure to chemicals such as benzene and other hydrocarbons Smoking Genetic abnormalities, such as Down syndrome Family history of leukemia 5
6
What are the Symptoms of Leukemia?
Symptoms mostly resemble flu or common cold. If you experience any of the below, consult your doctor for early diagnosis and treatment: Fever and chills Excessive sweating at nights Weakness and fatigue Swollen or bleeding gums Continuous headaches Anemia Enlarged liver and spleen Swollen tonsils Unexplained weight loss 6
7
Which Tests detect Leukemia?
Blood tests Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy Chromosome testing Lumbar puncture (spinal tap) Ultrasound, X-ray, CT scan, and MRI 7
8
Stages of Leukemia Stage 0 Stage 1 Stage 2 Stage 3 Stage 4
-More than 5,000 lymphocytes per microliter of blood -No other physical signs -Enlarged lymph nodes -No sign of an enlarged liver, spleen, anemia, or low levels of platelets -Lymphocytosis -Enlarged spleen and/or liver -May or may not have swollen lymph nodes -Lymphocytosis and anemia -May or may not have swollen lymph nodes -Enlarged liver or spleen -Lymphocytosis & low platelets levels -May or may not have swollen lymph nodes, an enlarged liver or spleen, or anemia 8

Treatment of leukemia Treatment is based on the stage and type of blood cancer. It is usually the combination of: Chemotherapy Biological therapy (biotherapy or Biological Response Modifiers, BRMs) Stem cell transplant (bone marrow transplant) Radiation therapy Targeted drug therapy Induction therapy Wait-and-watch approach (in case of early stage or chronic leukemia, which is progressing slowly) 9
