Plagiarism: Plagiarism occurs when you copy someone else's words or ideas and call them your own. In the United States and other countries, plagiarism is considered wrong and can result in a reduced or zero grade on a paper, or even being dropped from a class. In serious cases, a student may be expelled from a school. Please learn more about plagiarism, so you can avoid this mistake. theinstitute.ieee.org

What is “giving credit” or “crediting the source”?
Giving credit or crediting the source means that if you copy someone else’s words, you must tell the reader who wrote the words and where the words came from (the source). Image source:

Two ways to avoid plagiarism:
#1 paraphrasing #2 direct quotation

#1 Paraphrasing To paraphrase, you take someone else’s words or ideas and restate them in your own words, and credit the person (source) of the words or ideas. Example Source: Many people in Canada are bilingual.

#2 Direct Quotation If you find someone’s words or ideas that are unusual or especially delightful, you can copy these words exactly, as long as you put quotation marks around the words (the quote), and give the source credit. Example “When we enter a new culture—and cyberspace is its own culture …you might offend people without meaning to”. (Shea, 2011)
