3
Why Keep the PC Healthy? You want to protect your investment
How much do computers cost? Easy to maintain Keep it physically clean Protecting it from bad software Protect/Backup your files
4
Dirty Screen What makes the screen dirty? LCD/LED screens (Non-glass)
NEVER spray liquid or Windex! Ruins the anti-glare coating Can leak into monitor NO Paper towels or tissues- they scratch. NO bath towels- they leave lint.
5
Cleaning the Screen Pre-moistened Wipes Spray & Cloth
Spray liquid onto microfiber cloth Use on LCD/LED, cell phone screen, Tablets, photo frames, etc.
6
Activity Let’s clean the monitors in class
7
Dirty Keyboard What makes the keyboard dirty?
Could cause it not to work
8
Cleaning the Keyboard Unplug, turn upside down & shake over trash can
How to Clean a Keyboard Cleaning the Keyboard Unplug, turn upside down & shake over trash can Use compressed air Removes dust Do over trash can Use wipes Clean dirt & germs, disinfects NEVER use a vacuum to clean it when it is plugged in. Post-it note can be used to clean grime on sides of keys.
9
Dirty Mouse Can get sticky & dusty on bottom Sticky/dirty on top
Causes erratic movement Sticky/dirty on top
10
Cleaning the Mouse Unplug mouse first Use wipes
11
Activity Let’s clean the keyboard & mouse
12
Review- 3Q What should you use to clean a monitor?
LCD wipes What should you NOT use to clean a monitor? Windex/glass cleaner What can you use to quickly remove dust from a keyboard? Compressed air
13
Dirty Computer Case Dust & dirt build-up clogs fans
Causes it to overheat & shut down Could damage internal components, like the CPU.
14
Cleaning the Case Vacuum outside only Use compressed air
Unplug PC first! Use compressed air DON’T blow dust inside PC! Wipes to clean surface or damp cloth
15
Cleaning Your Devices Keep the laptop, tablet & phone clean
Cleaning Your Laptop Keep the laptop, tablet & phone clean Wipe screen with screen cleaner Use compressed air to clean dirt and debris from ports Wipe case with cleaner. Use keyboard disinfectant wipes on keyboard.
16
Laptop Cooling Take in air on bottom, expel heat out back
If you block intake, it gets hot! Cooling Pad/Stand Keeps cool air going in Prevents overheating
17
Laptop/Tablet Transportation
Padded Bags or Backpacks Protect and cushion when carrying Sleeves Look nice but offer no drop protection
18
Review- 4Q Before you vacuum any dust from the outside of a PC, what should you do? Power down & unplug the PC When dust clogs fans, what could happen? PC overheats The outside of a PC case can be wiped with what two things? Cleaning wipes or damp cloth What can be put under a laptop to keep it cool? Cooling pad
19
Protect from Theft Kensington Lock Secure physical devices
Businesses or Personal use
20
Organizing Under Desk Organize cables under desk with Velcro cable ties Keep PC off ground/rug
21
Project Shop for maintenance accessories
22
Power Strip Allows many plugs into one Not recommended!
23
Protect from Electrical Damage
Surge or Spike Too much electricity Lightning strike or power fluctuation Power Outages No electricity
24
What’s a surge? An increase in voltage significantly above the designated level Surge Protector diverts extra voltage like a valve
25
Surge Suppressor AKA Surge Protector What to look for?
Better than Power Strip Diverts excess electricity What to look for? # of outlets Joule rating More joules better protection Cord length $$ protection warranty Noise- unwanted/extra electricity on the lines. Sources include microwave, vacuum cleaner, wireless products, etc. Noise interferes with normal electrical signals.
26
Connected equipment warranty $$
Surge Suppressor # of Outlets Length of cord # of Joules Connected equipment warranty $$
27
Battery Backup Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS)
Battery backup PLUS surge protection Will power equip until you can save & shutdown 7-20 min.
28
Project Find a single outlet surge protector for your laptop
Find a 6-8 outlet surge protector for computers Find a surge/UPS strip with at least 10 minutes of backup time
29
Passwords
30
Create Strong Passwords
Protect yourself & your information Use strong passwords to prevent hacking Mistakes: Mistake 1: Problem: This password uses too much personal information, along with common words that could be found in the dictionary. Solution: A stronger version of this password would use symbols, uppercase letters, and a more random order. And rather than using family names, we could combine a character from a movie with a type of food. For example, Chewbacca and pizza could become chEwbAccAp!ZZa. Mistake 2: Problem: At only five characters, this password is way too short. It also includes part of her address, which is publicly available information. Solution: A stronger version of this password would be much longer, ideally more than 10 characters. We could also substitute a nearby street name instead of her current address. For example, Pemberly Ave could become p3MberLY%Av. Mistake 3: Problem: While patterns like this are easy to remember, they're also some of the first things a hacker might guess when attempting to access your account. Solution: Remember that random passwords are much stronger than simple patterns. If you're having trouble creating a new password, try using a password generator instead. Here's an example of a generated password: #eV$pIg&qf. Mistake 4: Problem: There's nothing really wrong with this password, but remember that you should never use the same password with different accounts. Solution: Create a unique password for each of your online accounts. Instead of writing your passwords on paper where someone might find them, you can use a password manager to store them securely online. Password managers can remember and enter your password on different websites, which means you won't have to remember longer passwords. Examples of password managers include LastPass, 1Password, and Google Chrome's password manager. #5is NOT a mistake: This is a great example of a strong password. It's strong, long, and difficult for someone else to guess. It uses more than 10 characters with letters (both uppercase and lowercase), numbers, and symbols, and includes no obvious personal information or common words. This password might even be a bit too complicated to remember without a password manager, which underscores why they're so helpful when creating a strong password.

Common Problems (6) Printer Problem things to try:
Is the printer turned on? Is the USB printer cable plugged in? Is it out of ink or toner? Is it out of paper? Did you select the correct printer to print it to? Power button: Is the power cord plugged into the computer & the outlet? If it is plugged into an outlet, does the outlet work? Plug something like a lamp in & try it. If it is plugged into a surge protector, is it turned on? Plug a lamp in it to test it. If it’s a laptop, is the battery dead? Application is frozen: Ctrl+Alt+Del, select the program in the list & click end task On a MAC, Command+Option+Esc, force quit Restart the computer Mouse or Keyboard stopped working: Are they plugged in? If wireless, are batteries dead? Check to see if wireless receiver is plugged in? Unplug & plug it back it.
