Protestant Reformation
A religious movement that divided the western church into Catholic and Protestant groups.

Christian Humanism A movement that called for the reform of the Catholic Church. Inward religious feeling that would bring that reform to the church. It was thought that if people read basic works of Christianity, they would become more pious.

Desiderius Erasmus Best known humanist.
His view is known as “Philosophy of Christ”. He believed Christianity should show people how to live good lives on a daily basis instead of a system that people practice to be saved. Did not wish to break away from the church.

Praise of Folly Written in 1508 by Erasmus.
It humorously criticized aspects of his society that focused on monks who said everything has to be done in a certain way. he believed they were in most need of reform.

3 Reasons for Calling Reform at Church
Corruption in the Catholic Church – Popes concerned with politics and worldly interests instead of spiritual matters. Julius II personally led armies against his enemies. People believed he should not be a military leader but instead, a spiritual leader. Many church officials used their offices to advance their careers and wealth. Could not tell people how they could save their souls.

Salvation People looked for salvation by collecting relics and their veneration. This would lead to Indulgence; the release from all or part of the punishment for sin. Churches sold indulgences in the form of a certificate.

John Tetzel Sold indulgences with the slogan, “as soon as the coin in the coffer (money box) rings, the soul from purgatory springs.”

Modern Devotion-Geert Groote
A movement that rejected dogma and instead stressed the need to follow the teaching of Jesus. gradual loss of monastic traditions and the lack of moral values among the clergy, and he sought to rediscover genuine pious practices.

Martin Luther Catholic Monk and Professor at the University of Wittenburg, Germany. Was known to heavily lecture the Bible.

Beliefs on Gaining Salvation
Catholic Belief – Both faith and good works/deeds were needed to attain salvation. Martin Luther Belief – Not saved through good works but instead through their faith in God. If an individual has faith, then God makes that person worthy of salvation. The Bible is the only source of religious truth – NOT the Pope.

Ninety-Five Thesis A list made by Luther that attacked the abuses of the Catholic Church. Especially attacked indulgences. He wanted to continue using 2 sacraments; baptisms and Eucharist. Placed the list on the door of All Saints’ Church in Wittenberg, Germany.

Edict of Worms Martin was brought before Charles V.
Was to recant the 95 Thesis, he refused. the Edict of Milan made him an outlaw. No one was to take him in or aid him in any way.

Bible readings preaching of the word, and song. This would then become known as Lutheranism.

What held Charles V from stopping Lutheranism?
Fighting with France (20 years) Conflict with the Pope Ottoman Empire pushing into his empire

Peace of Augsburg Several hundred territorial states ran by a Prince.
Charles agreed to a peace treaty that allowed German State rulers to pick their religion, either Catholic or Lutheranism. The occupants of the Prince(s) territories had to take the religion of their Prince. The Jews were left out.
