Where do we get our Energy from?
Aims: Where do we get our energy from? What is non-renewable & renewable energy? What are the advantages & disadvantages of both?
2
What are energy resources?
A resource is anything that is of use to people. Geographers use the term to refer to the natural resources found on earth.
3
How many different types of energy can you identify?
Watch the following images & note down the different sources from which we get our energy from.
36
How many different types of energy did you identify?
Coal Gas Oil Nuclear Solar Wind Tidal HEP Geothermal Fuel wood
37
Can you answer your lesson key questions?
Where do we get our energy from? Y/N? What is non-renewable & renewable energy? What are the advantages & disadvantages of both?
38
Non-renewable & Renewable Energy?
What is non-renewable energy? Also known as fossil fuels, because they take millions of years to form. However, once they have been used up they can not be replaced. What is renewable energy? Energy that can be used forever

Where do we get our energy from? Y/N? What is non-renewable & renewable energy? Y/N? What are the advantages & disadvantages of both?
40
Renewable Energy: Advantages & Disadvantages
What are the advantages? Clean energy (does not cause pollution) Sustainable Can provide power for places that are a long way from the national grid What are the disadvantages? More expensive than fossil fuels Not very reliable Power only produced when wind is blowing, sun is shining etc. It would take thousands of wind turbines to produce enough electricity to power a city
41
Disadvantages of non-renewable energy
Opencast mining uses up large areas of countryside & causes noise & dust Oil spills at sea kill fish, sea birds & animals Oil spills on land pollute water supplies & can affect people’s health Burning fossil fuels releases chemicals which cause acid rain that kills fish & trees CO2 is released causing global warming
42
World Energy Consumption
Oil (40%) Coal (27%) Gas (23%) Nuclear (8%) HEP (2%) Other forms of energy combined are less than 1% Why are fossil fuels used so heavily? Cheap to use Easy to obtain Can you come up with some more advantages of Non-Renewable Energy? What do you immediately notice about these figures?
43
