FDR believe the federal Government needed to play an active role in helping the economy recover and provide relief to Americans

4 Purpose of New Deal Programs
New Deal Programs were designed to provide Relief, Recovery, or Reform (The 3 Rs) (100 Days) Relief from immediate hardships of the depression Long term economic Recovery Reform to prevent another depression

5 Fireside Chats Informal Radio speeches FDR delivered to the American People (heard the cracking of the fireplace) Tactic to calm the American People 1st President to address the public weekly.

6 NEW DEAL PROGRAMS Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) – Insured bank deposits up to $5,000. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) – To regulate the Stock Market and make safer place for investments. Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA) – Ended over production of crops by providing financial aid to farmers by paying them not to plant part of their land and kill off the excess livestock. In 1934 farm prices began to rise.

7 New deal programs Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) – built a series of dams in the Tennessee river valley to control floods and to generate electric power. Replanted forests, built fertilizer plants, created jobs. Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) – provided jobs to 2 million young men in which they replanted forests, built trails, dug irrigation ditches, and fought fires. Roosevelt’s favorite New Deal Program.

8 New deal programs National Recovery Administration (NRA) – Developed codes of fair competition to govern whole industries. These codes established minimum wages for workers and minimum prices for goods. Public Works Administration (PWA) – built bridges, dams, power plants, and governmental buildings. These projects improved the nation’s infrastructure and created millions of new jobs. Social Security Act – provided unemployment insurance for workers who lost their jobs, aid for work related accident victims, and aid for poverty stricken mothers and children, the blind and the disabled.
