Fixed Assets, ITAM, SAM Fixed Assets: from accounting perspective, an item with a useful life greater than 1 reporting period, depreciated over time ITAM: Joins financial, contractual, inventory functions to support life cycle management of software and hardware SAM (from ITIL): All infrastructure & processes for effective management, control, protection of software assets throughout their life cycle

ITIL Service Assets ITIL Service Asset: Any resource or capability that could contribute to the delivery of a service Configuration Item (CI): A service asset that needs to be managed in order to deliver an IT service Configuration Record: set of attributes & relationships about a CI, stored in CMDB & managed with a configuration management system (CMS)

Why SACM? Simply managing each asset through its life cycle isn’t enough It is critical to: Understand the relationship between assets Location Owner/custodian Related document masters Related software masters Applicable SLA Establish & document baselines (e.g. standard model and configuration, version, relevant dates, status, etc.) Know that baselines may change over time through the change (and release) process Maintain previous baselines for audit purposes and in case any roll back is needed
