Purpose of Tonight’s Meeting
• Welcome you to Roosevelt and Stanton Athletics. To provide parents and athletes with necessary information for a successful fall sports season. To introduce Senate Bill 252, also know as Lindsay’s Law. To meet many of the members of the athletic department family. This PowerPoint is available on the website.

Interscholastic athletics programs are not designed to prepare you for the next level of athletics.

Basic OHSAA Rules & Regulations

As a student-athlete, YOU are responsible for your compliance.
• General OHSAA Eligibility Standards • Eligibility rules exist to help maintain competitive balance in school sports and to promote the purpose of education-based athletics. As a student-athlete, YOU are responsible for your compliance. Besides OHSAA regulations, Roosevelt also has the authority to establish additional academic standards and codes of conduct.

• General OHSAA Eligibility Standards •
If this is your first season of athletic participation (no previous sport(s) played) at Roosevelt and you did not attend Roosevelt or Stanton last year, you must see Mr. Pfaff in the athletic office ASAP. Academic Eligibility - Must pass 5 credits (HS) or 5 classes (MS) previous 9 weeks. WARNING: At RHS, DO NOT rely on any PE courses for athletic eligibility since they only count as a ¼ credit. Students taking College Credit Plus or PSEO must comply with OHSAA scholarship standards.

• OHSAA Middle School Scholarship Standards •
All incoming seventh graders are eligible as far as the scholarship bylaw regardless of previous academic achievement. To maintain eligibility, 8th grade students must have received passing grades in a minimum of five of the subjects in which they received grades in the immediately preceding grading period.

• OHSAA High School Scholarship Standards •
All incoming ninth graders must have received passing grades in a minimum of five of the subjects in which they received grades in the immediately preceding grading period (8th). To maintain eligibility, high school (10-12) students must have received passing grades in a minimum of five one-credit courses, or the equivalent, in the immediately preceding grading period.

• OHSAA Scholarship Standards •
Students taking College Credit Plus must comply with OHSAA scholarship standards. All students participating in athletics via the state law that permits home educated, non-public, community and STEM school students to participate at public schools must also comply with OHSAA scholarship standards. Summer school, semester and yearly grades have no effect on OHSAA eligibility.

• OHSAA Transfer Standards •
If you have transferred to Roosevelt, you must ensure all required paperwork has been submitted to the OHSAA AND the state office has granted approval for eligibility. Please follow up in the athletic office. Immediate eligibility will be granted only if one of the exceptions to the OHSAA transfer regulation has been met.

Your Health & Safety

• Your Health & Safety • Before the season’s first official practice, you must have had a physical examination within the past year AND an examination clearance form must be on file at the school. Since practice started on Monday & Tuesday, this should not be an issue. In addition, you will not be eligible unless you and your parents have signed the Ohio Department of Health’s concussion form and the NEW Lindsay’s Law Form, along with an updated EMA. • Lindsay’s Law• Lindsay’s Law is a law enacted by the Ohio Legislature in 2017 pertaining to Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) in youth athletics. It covers all athletes 19 years or younger, who practice for or compete in athletic activities and applies to all public and private schools. Sudden Cardiac Arrest occurs when the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating.

Lindsay’s Law REQURIES-
COACHES: Special sudden cardiac arrest training and certifications by ALL coaches annually. PARENTS & ATHLETES: Review of the Lindsay’s Law video ( YfCWQPeqw&feature=youtu.be). Review Sudden Cardiac Arrest informational handout provided by our coaches. Return to the athletic office the signed Parent/Athlete Signature Form prior to EACH sport season of participation.

• Concussions • It is EXTREMELY important for everyone involved in school sports to recognize the potential dangers associated with concussions and review their responsibilities in protecting student-athletes. Concussions are NOT just a problem in football concussions can happen in just about any sport! In Ohio, any athlete who exhibits signs, symptoms, or behaviors consistent with a concussion such as loss of consciousness, headache, dizziness, confusion or balance problems shall be IMMEDIATELY removed from the contest or practice and shall not return to play that same day.

• Concussions continued •
The OHSAA & Roosevelt’s medical team have very strict concussion management protocol and all athletes, parents and coaches are required to adhere to it. In addition, athletes and parents must review and sign the Ohio Department of Health’s “Concussion Information Sheet” prior to participation. Please check with our medical team is you have any questions or concerns with our concussion protocol.

• Additional Health & Safety Guidelines •
The OHSAA does not permit the use of any form of alcohol, tobacco or illegal drugs. Besides the health risks involved, use of any of these items will result in students being disqualified from contests and violators likely facing additional school and legal penalties.

• Additional Health & Safety Guidelines •
KCS has a board approved Athletic Code of Conduct for it’s athletes for POSSESION OR USE of Tobacco, Alcohol and/or Drugs – First Offense – Denial of 20% of scheduled contests, beginning on the date of notification. Subsequent Offenses in the same academic year – Denial of 40% of contests, beginning on the date of notification. Complete athletic code of conduct is available on the website in the athletic handbook.

• Respect The Game • The OHSAA and KCS’s vision for positive sporting behavior is built on expectations. It calls on the school community, administrators, officials, coaches, students, parents and fans to strive for positive sporting behavior in everything they do by teaching and demonstrating the value of ethics, integrity, equity, fairness and respect. Kent City Schools has an athlete and a fan code of conduct to enforce sporting behavior, ethics and integrity. Outlined in the athletic handbook.

• Respect The Game • All of us are expected to accept the responsibility and privilege of representing our schools and community in a positive manner while participating in and watching our athletic events. You are expected to: • Treat all opponents, coaches and officials with respect. • Ensure that your actions do not attempt to embarrass, ridicule or demean others. STAY POSITIVE AND RESPECTFUL!!
