Comparing and Ordering Integers
2
To compare integers, you can compare the signs as well as the magnitude, or size, of the numbers. Greater numbers are graphed farther to the right. ***Remember: Negative numbers are ALWAYS less than positive numbers!** The larger a negative number is, the SMALLER its VALUE! is LESS than -1
3
Always look at the signs of the two numbers you are comparing!
If you are comparing a positive and a negative, the positive is ALWAYS greater! If they have the same signs: If they are both positive—the larger number is greater If they are both negative—the one with the larger number is the SMALLER number!
4
Comparing Integers Let’s compare -3 and -1.
Graph each on the number line. The one farther to the left is the smaller number, so -3 ˂ -1
5
Comparing Integers Compare the following integers: Justin has a score of -4 on the Trueville Trivia game. Desiree’s score is -5. Write an inequality to compare the scores. The temperature on Tuesday was 2˚ F. The temperature on Wednesday was -2˚F. Write an inequality to compare the temperatures.
6
Ordering Integers You can use a number line to order a set of integers. Order the following integers from least to greatest using a number line. -9, 6, -3, 0 Plot each integer on the number line. Put them in the order they appear from left to right, since smaller numbers are on the left. -9, -3, 0, 6 If you were putting them in order from greatest to least, you would write them in order from right to left. Larger numbers are to the right.
7
Ordering Integers You can also compare all your negative numbers, then compare your positive numbers. Put the following in order from greatest to least: -4, 3, 11, -25 First compare your negative numbers: Then compare your positive numbers: Then put them in order. 11, 3 -4, -25
8
Ordering Integers Order the following from least to greatest:
-18, 30, 12, -6, 3 -3, 0, -6, 5, 19 Order the following from greatest to least: 9, -7, 0, -2, 12 -7, 4, -3, -8, 6
