Quick Write – October 27 Open your Reader’s Notebook to the Writing Section For 5 minutes write about any topic of your choice. Possible Topics Write about a day you would like to forget. What character from a book would you like to meet? Why? You just got 1 million dollars. What do you do? Invent a monster. Describe it. Why is it scary?

What is the difference between literal and figurative language? What is Metaphor and how do I recognize it? What is Simile and how do I recognize it? What is Personification and how do I recognize it? Why is Alliteration a Sound Device and not figurative language? What is Allusion and how do I recognize it? Once I’ve identified figurative language in a text, how can I interpret the effect it has on the text?

Metaphor A metaphor compares two unlike things.
A metaphor states that one thing IS another thing.

Group Discussion My mom is a dinosaur. My dad is a train wreck.
Kisses are the flowers of love in bloom. The job interview was a rope ladder dropped from heaven. Each blade of grass was a tiny bayonet pointed firmly at our bare feet. This job is the cancer of my dreams and aspirations The teacher planted the seeds of wisdom. I was lost in a sea of nameless faces. His fine wit makes such a wound that the knife is lost in it. History has many cunning passages and contrived corridors.

Simile A figure of speech which involves a direct comparison between two unlike things, usually with the words like or as.

Group Discussion As easy as taking candy from a baby. As stubborn as a mule. As fragile as a house of cards. They fought like cats and dogs. My love is like a red rose. The cabin windows have grown blank as eyeballs of the dead. A fatal letter wings its way across the sea, like a bird of prey. As in depths of many seas, my heart was drowned in memories. Toby manipulated the people in his life as though they were chess pieces.

Homework Metaphor Activity
Write a poem about yourself. Your poem does not have to rhyme, but it does need to paint a picture of you! The first line should be only the word me. The last line is your name. The second, third, and fourth lines are metaphors describing you! Do this as an individual. Me I am a cloud floating in a hot air balloon. I am a flower growing toward the sun.
