A Little About Mrs. Carter
This is my fourteenth year teaching 7 years teaching 5th grade at West Heritage elementary 7 years teaching LA/SS at Etiwanda Intermediate B.S. in Liberal Studies from Chico State with an emphasis in Child Development M.A. in Education in 2006 Three children-Drew (6), Reese (4), and Layne (2)

Tips for Middle School Success
Organization is KEY. Prepare backpack for the day. Talk about future career and educational goals. Offer hands-on guidance. Teach time-management skills. Develop study skills. Get a good night’s rest (8-10 hours) Phone’s turned off!!! Eat a healthy breakfast.

Curriculum Language Arts Parent Volunteers Needed: -Social Studies
-Study Sync Provides a 21st century approach to the common core standards. Homework will vary this year as we navigate the new curriculum together. Expect many homework assignments to be digital. -Social Studies -Ancient Civilizations Please note that not all chapters will be taught in the order of the book. Parent Volunteers Needed: India Day, China Day, Greek Day Food Dances Culture

Universal Access Daily from 9:35-10:25 Every Monday is with HR teacher
Grouped by ability Reinforcing skills i-Ready program will be used to identify specific needs Rotate skill and teacher every 6 weeks

Accelerated Reader (AR)
Classroom Students will have a MONTHLY AR goal based on their current reading level Your child must read nightly in order to reach their monthly goal All students who meet their individual goal will earn a reward at the end of the month School Wide Goal Points Deadline 1st Goal 50 A.R. Points October 28, 2016 2nd Goal 100 A.R. Points February 16, 2017 3rd Goal 150 A.R. Points April 21, 2017 Students who reach 150 points by April 21, 2017 will be invited to the A.R. PARTY at the end of the Year!

Fix-Its Students who earn 69% or below on a test or quiz, might qualify for a Fix-It It is a second chance to perform better on the assignment. Assignment will be marked with a Fix-It and due date. Usually due the next day. The new grade will be an average of the two scores, up to 70%.

Never take points away When a team earns 5 tallies, they win!

Behavior Log Your child will be asked to sign the behavior log if he/she breaks a school or classroom rule. If your child signs the behavior log, it will be noted on their Wildcat Weekly Report. Students will serve Friday lunch detention

Bathroom Passes This is a 6th grade policy.
Each unused pass can be applied as 10 points extra credit at the end of the trimester. New passes will be given at the beginning of each trimester.

Homework Late homework will qualify for half credit!

Thursday Folders and Wildcat Weekly Reports
Main form of parent/teacher communication Go through EVERYTHING! Important notes/graded papers Wildcat Weekly reports must be filled out, signed, and returned the next day or your child will have lunch detention.

Parent/Teacher Conferences
Week of September 26th – September 29th. Conference sign ups will be coming home soon.

Absences It is your child’s responsibility to make up class work and homework on the days they were absent Check the “While you Were Out” board to get any absent assignments 2 days for every day they were absent

Science Camp March 8-10 The cost is $285.00
You may make partial payments at (3 separate payments) It is an optional trip

Camp medication paperwork due by Friday, February 10th, 2017

Office Policies The office is off limits to students without permission If you deliver something to the office for you child, it your child's responsibility to check the student window. No phone calls will be made to classrooms Phone calls are not allowed unless I give your child permission No phone calls for band instrument, homework, etc. Phones are for emergencies only
