Applied research projects with non-academic partners undertaken by grad students & PDFs Grad students, Post-Docs from ANY discipline … funded via grant held by (& are supervised by) their professor …to do research with non-academic partners in Canada “Interns” balance time on-site and back at the university Large-scale, multidisciplinary projects, not just 4 months projects from $15,000 to $2M+ No deadlines, not a competition, we can help with applications Mandate of Accelerate is research collaborations between industry and academia. 9 Scalability: build large-scale projects
= 4 months 1 intern & prof Can build bigger projects from simple 4 month units First 1 to 5 internship units: partner funding matched 1:1 Stronger Mitacs matching available with bigger projects Projects can be multi-disciplinary (and multi-partner)

10 Funding model Standard: 1-5 internships
Cluster: 6 or > internships & 3 or > interns The model for Accelerate is built on blocks of four-month internships. The industry partner and Mitacs contribute matching money for each internship unit. The university receives the funding and funds the student. A portion goes to expenses. Funding starts at $15,000 per four-month internship, but can scale into the millions. Funds sent to university to cover intern stipends + research costs (e.g. reagents, supplies)

Only post-doc program to provide research management training 3 core competencies Training includes: Assessment of professional skills  -> Individual Development Plan In-person & online training includes 16 hrs of project management Learning management system -> track skill development, chart progress, online forums with other Fellows Leadership & Management Communication & Relationship Building Personal and Professional Management In-person & online training in networking, big-picture thinking, presentation skills, career planning, coaching and mentorship, communication, confidence, creative problem solving, emotional intelligence, financial literacy, leadership, listening, management, and negotiation, including 16 hours of project management training

Mitacs Globalink Establishes and reinforces international links through two-way mobility of exceptional students and researchers Promotes Canada as a top destination for research opportunities and showcases Canadian research expertise around the world Mitacs Globalink works by: Recruiting top international students to Canadian universities Since 2009, Mitacs has matched over 1,000 senior undergraduates with Canadian faculty through its Globalink Research Internships initiative. Mitacs Globalink now offers two-way mobility opportunities between Canada and Mitacs partner countries for both undergraduate and graduate students. The program promotes Canada as a top destination for research opportunities and showcases Canadian research expertise around the world. Sending Canadian students abroad to work with leading international researchers and industries /globalink

Try out potential new graduate students through a summer project with your research group 12 week project – summer 2018 Visiting undergraduate student# spends time at Canadian institution with the professor Projects defined by faculty (call closes June 14) Faculty can submit multiple projects Students pick projects Mitacs sends a shortlist (the best students) to prof Mitacs facilitates travel, paperwork, accommodation, provides stipend $15,000 Fellowship available to return for grad studies #Current partners: Australia India Brazil Mexico China Tunisia France Germany Saudi Arabia

With industry abroad, any country except USA can include time at a foreign university No deadlines, not a competition Partnership Award 3-6 Month *undergrad/ grad student project abroad - *$5,000 to $7,000 - next call opens later in 2017 *Also: opportunities to host grad students from abroad *Details depend on partner country. Recent calls: Brazil, China, France, India, Japan, Mexico, Tunisia, S Korea Research Award

18 Canadian Science Policy Fellowship
Opportunity for postdocs* & faculty members to get involved in the government policy making process Year-long fellowship program in Ottawa (federal government) & Victoria (provincial government) Building connections between universities & government 12-month placement with competitive remuneration *Eligible applicants can be alumni no longer at a university
