Input, Output, and Specialist Devices
Component 1 Input, Output, and Specialist Devices
2
Starter – Pre-reading recap
What is an Input device? What is an Output device? Describe the difference between input and output Name 3 different Input Devices Name 3 different Output Devices How can specialist input and output devices help people with disabilities? Give examples Are some devices both Input and Output? What Input and Output devices are used daily in a school or office? What would happen if a computer had no Input devices? What would happen if a computer had no Output devices?
3
Learning Intention and Outcomes
Learning Intention To develop an understanding of a range of Input, Output, and specialist devices. Identify Input and Output devices Explain the different between Inputting and Outputting Describe the use and characteristics of input and output devices Describe how Input and Output devices can be used to help people with disabilities Analyse the benefits of specialised devices
4
Quiz! Input or Output Device
Open the Input or Output Device quiz from today’s folder In your book write down: The name of each device If you think it is Input or Output If you were wrong correct it using red pen! Record the score that you got on the quiz
5
Input Devices An input device is a piece of hardware that is used to enter data into a computer. There are two categories of input devices, manual input devices and automatic input devices. For example a mouse or keyboard is a manual input device, whereas an ultrasonic sensor is an automatic input device.
6
Output Devices An output device is a piece of hardware that is used to display or output data which has been processed or has been stored on the computer. There are many different kinds of output devices. You don't need to know a great deal about any particular one, but you do need to be able to identify the most common and be able to make suggestions as to the most appropriate output device to use in a given scenario. You also need to be able to explain why your choice is the right one and compare it to other output devices that you could have chosen.
7
Where do the devices fit in?
Input devices allow the user to put data (information) into the computer The computer processes this data, performs calculations, or manipulates this data It decides what should be output to the user: A Letter on a screen? A number in a sum? The computer outputs the data to the user using an Output Device

Graded Exercises: Grade 4
Answer questions 1 and 2 of the grade 4 exercises. Extension: Complete the rest of the grade 4 questions using your independent research learning habit to find the information required.
9
Input and Output Devices to help people with disabilities
People are diverse! - some people are not able to use the 'standard' devices that you or I use in our every-day lives. And so, devices have been specially developed to allow for these differences. Some disabilities mean that the input devices themselves need to be placed at convenient locations for the person. For example, someone with physical problems may need to have the input devices close by.

Activity: Definitions
On your crib sheets define: Input Device Output Device Extension: Write and answer the following exam question in your book. Using examples where appropriate explain how input and output devices can be used to make an office environment more inclusive for employees with disabilities. 6 marks

Graded Exercises You must complete the grade 4 exercises before you move on. You can use the pre-reading, PowerPoint, Internet, or the Help! Folder to help you complete the grade 4 exercises. When you have completed grade 4 you can move on to the grade 5-7 exam questions. (You will need to print these). Remember to be smart when using the Internet: Wikipedia is often complicated – sometimes even I don’t understand! BBC Bitesize, Teach ICT, and Revision World are better places to find your information!
13
Grade 9 Extension A secondary storage device refers to any volatile storage device that is internal or external to the computer. It can be any storage device beyond the primary storage that enables permanent data storage. Create a revision resource that identifies the different secondary storage devices that are available to a business that wants to back up their internal data in a secure manner. You should explain the different hardware technologies could be used including: Magnetic Disks Magnetic Tape Flash Drives CD, DVD Roms Secondary Storage definitions definition-technology-devices.html Video showing different secondary storage devices manage/storage/back-up manage/storage/store-data Website explaining the importance of backing up data and different devices that could be used 5 Ways to back up data

Crib Sheet – What I must remember about ___
Starting Point: Read the learning outcomes from the exam board Record the key facts that you need to remember about Input, Output, and Specialised devices. Think about what you have learnt today, what questions you have been asked, definitions of words, or anything else you think is important!
