Used the presidency as a “bully pulpit”

A term that meant many progressive reforms

5. Using Federal Power TRUSTBUSTING 1902 COAL STRIKE RAILROAD REGULATION
Trusts – legal bodies created to hold stock in many companies
Companies would merge to form monopolies and drive prices up
TR used the Sherman Antitrust Act to sue many of these companies
He was successful in breaking up the Northern Securities Company
Became known as the TRUSTBUSTER
1902 COAL STRIKE
140,000 workers in Pennsylvania walked off the job
TR intervened and got both sides to compromise
Setting the precedent that presidents can intervene when the public interest is at stake
Also showed the nation that disputes could be resolved in an orderly way with experts’ helping hand.
RAILROAD REGULATION
Elkins Act – Made it illegal for railroad officials to give rebates for using particular railroads. Railroads could not charge rates without notification
Hepburn Act – Limited the distribution of free rail passes that were used as bribery
