1 Elements and Principles of Design
A Review

2

3 elements are the building blocks of design Line Space Shape Size Color
Value Texture elements are the building blocks of design

4 Line A line can vary in length width direction curvature & color

5 Shape Shapes can be divided into several types Geometric Organic
(square, triangle, circle) Organic (irregular in outline)

6 variations in the proportions of objects, lines or shapes
Size variations in the proportions of objects, lines or shapes

7 Space Space is the empty or open are between, around, above, below, or within objects

8 its lightness or darkness
Color HUE another word for color INTENSITY its brightness or dullness VALUE its lightness or darkness The perceived character of a surface according to the wavelength of light reflected from it

10 pebbly rough silky Texture
Texture is the way a surface feels (actual texture) or how it may look (implied texture) pebbly rough silky

11 or how light something looks
Value Value is how dark or how light something looks Design value changes in color by adding black or white to the color

12 The principles use the elements of design to create a composition
Principles of Design The principles use the elements of design to create a composition

13 Balance Balance is a feeling of visual equality in shape, form, value, color, etc. Balance can be symmetrical or evenly balanced or asymmetrical and un-evenly balanced. Objects, values, colors, textures, shapes, forms, etc., can be used in creating a balance in a composition.

14 Contrast occurs when two elements are different

15 Emphasis Emphasis is used to make certain parts of artwork stand out and grab your attention

16 Proportion/Scale Proportion describes the size, location or amount of one thing compared to another Proportion describes the size, location or amount of one thing compared to another

17 Pattern Pattern is created by repeating an element (line, shape or color) over and over again

18 Gradation A series of gradual, successive stages;
a systematic progression

19 Composition The combining of distinct elements to form a whole

20 What Elements and Principles of Design
can you identify?

21 Design Boards Design Boards are simply tools design consultants use to communicate with their clients. Generally, a design board consists of small samples of design elements proposed for the job. For example, a design board could include samples of stone floors, wood floors, granite counters, carpet, faux wall finishes and hardware. Design boards can help clients see what the products will look like together, making difficult design decisions easier for the client.
