White reflects all light. Ex: summer clothes

Fun with color Clothes reflect the color they are and absorb other colors. What happens if the color of light isn’t present?

FILTERS Allows only one color to pass through and absorbs all other color.

MIXING LIGHT Primary colors: Colors that produce white light when combined. (Red, Blue, Green) Complementary light: Two colors that combine to make white light. (blue + yellow, green + magenta, red + cyan)

Mixing light is an additive process
Mixing light is an additive process. As you add color, more is reflected back. If you mix all of the colors, all light is reflected back as white light.

Pigment Mixing pigment is a subtractive process. The more color added, less color is reflected back. It’s absorbed instead. All combine to form black.

White Light White light is made of several colors so it is polychromatic. Dispersion is the process of separating white light into the different colors of the spectrum.

TYPES OF SPECTRUMS Continuous spectrum- colors blend from one to the other. Produced by an incandescent source. Bright Line Spectrum- band of color separated by dark areas. Produced by a hot gas. Dark line spectrum-(absorption spectrum)-continuous spectrum with dark band. Produced by a cool gas placed in front of an incandescent light

RED SHIFT If the light source moves towards you the color shifts blue. If it is moving away the color shift red.

RED SHIFT Can be used to determine how a star or planet is rotating. The light from the side moving away shifts red while the side moving towards you shifts blue.
