Objective The objective of the exercise is to:
Select the most promising adaptation measures and opportunities for the case company from those identified in the previous steps Address key issues around the implementation of these measures and opportunities that would need to be part of strategic advice on climate change adaptation for the case company Identify key messages to support the implementation of the measures and realisation of opportunities Specify a communication strategy to send the messages identified ToC - Module 4 Exercise

Introduction to STEP 1 – Prioritizing and sorting adaptation measures
In STEP 1 of this exercise you will identify those adaptation measures and opportunities that the case company should actually implement or realise. The selection should be based on the results obtained in the previous steps. Consider the ranking of the Multi-Criteria Analysis as well as the Cost-Benefit Analysis Then sort the measures into categories: short-term, medium-term and long- term action. Make sure that the number and extent of measures implemented per term is realistic and achievable given the case company’s general economic condition ToC - Module 4 Exercise

Introduction to STEP 2 – Integrating measures in corporate strategy
In STEP 2 of this exercise you will identify some additional issues relating to each of the adaptation measures and opportunities identified that the company should implement or realise. These issues relate to particular measures and includes: barriers and conflicts hampering implementation, ideas to overcome these barriers, options for integration and monitoring indicators This information should be used when formulating the actual results report that will serve as a strategy document for case company management The most relevant elements for each measure and opportunities are challenges for implementation, solutions to overcome them, the technology level required, integration potential and monitoring indicators ToC - Module 4 Exercise

Introduction to STEP 4 – Specifying the communication strategy
In STEP 4 of this exercise you will specify how the messages that the case company wants to send out are to be communicated. The communication strategy will be part of the overall adaptation strategy that the case company will develop For developing a communication strategy it is necessary to define the target group, the aim that you want to achieve by sending the message, the means of communication, the time and frequency when the message is sent and the person supposed to send it. Make sure that your choices are relevant for the case company Revisit your assumptions and thoughts and note them down in this step. If there is no information on certain aspects in the case study you can come up with your own ideas ToC - Module 4 Exercise
14
Guidance for Participants – Developing internal and external messages
For this task you should Join your consultant group Brainstorm in the group on what key messages should be sent out by the case company to internal as well as external stakeholders You should come up with at least two messages for internal stakeholders and three messages for external stakeholders Write the messages that you come up with on notecards as well as in the Excel; include who is addressed by the message You have 30 min for this task Internal messages External messages Realising climate change business opportunities can contribute to company growth We can ensure a steady supply of goods We support rural livelihoods Water-saving makes jobs more secure We preserve local waterbodies ToC - Module 4 Exercise
15
Guidance for Facilitators – Comparing results
After having completed the 4 steps, participants should present their results Ask a separate group to share the results for each step; ask the other groups too add and comment After completing the presentation ask the group: Do you think this approach can serve you to develop an adaptation and communication strategy for real companies? What could be challenges in applying this step to a real company? How would you develop an adaptation and communication strategy for a real company? Allow 30 min for discussion and presentation ToC - Module 4 Exercise
16
Discussion – Comparing results
This exercise is about presenting the results to your peers and discussing how this is relevant for any real climate change adaptation assessment. After presenting the results discuss the following questions: Do you think this approach can serve you to develop an adaptation and communication strategy for real companies? What could be challenges in applying this step to a real company? How would you develop an adaptation and communication strategy for a real company? ToC - Module 4 Exercise
