This is a decisive separation from Abram’s past. Abram is to leave his country. Abram is to leave his people. Abram is to leave his family. This call came on at least two occasions – Acts 7:2-4. 5

Acts 7:2-4 (NASB) 2 And he said, “Hear me, brethren and fathers! The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran, 3 and said to him, ‘Leave your country and your relatives, and come into the land that I will show you.’ 4 Then he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Haran. From there, after his father died, God had him move to this country in which you are now living.

Galatians 3:6-9 (NASB) 6 Even so Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness. 7 Therefore, be sure that it is those who are of faith who are sons of Abraham. 8 The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “All the nations will be blessed in you.” 9 So then those who are of faith are blessed with Abraham, the believer.

Galatians 3:16 (NASB) 16 Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as referring to many, but rather to one, “And to your seed,” that is, Christ.
24
Called by God Genesis 12 The Gift of Faith This thing called faith.
Faith is a natural thing. There was the natural sequence of need, promise, and faith on Adam’s part in Genesis 3:15 and now in Abram. Faith is also an unnatural thing. God’s promises seem so unreasonable sometimes because they are far beyond our reach or comprehension as humans. Faith is always connected to obedience. 14
25
Called by God Genesis 12 The Gift of Faith
Steps of Abram’s faith in Hebrews 11:8-17 Abram obeyed! Abraham lived (made his home in a foreign land)! Abraham trusted in the impossible, the miraculous! Abraham was willing to sacrifice it all! 15
26
At what stage of growth is your faith?
Called by God Genesis 12 Application Is your faith based on a proper understanding of the call of God in your life? At what stage of growth is your faith? Are you obeying Him? Are you living in Him? Are you trusting even in the unreasonable? Are you sacrificing all for the kingdom? 16
