1 AGED 18 What was I interested in before going to university…
Showhomes and sales of houses – undertook work experience in estate agents at age 15. Like going around houses and seeing how they were set up – how many bedrooms, toilets etc. Not specifically new houses, any house would do. Location location location and grand designs – finding people houses and building houses. I also like place in the sun. Anything to do with finding someone their dream house. Legally Blonde.... Expressed interest in being a lawyer – so did my best friend, my friends best friend and the best friend I hadn’t yet met. Looked into courses and found it interesting – wasn’t clever enough! Considered HR but soon found it wasn’t interesting enough. Discovered the surveying courses on UCAS whilst trying to decide my future and was instantly impressed. School Subjects – Business Studies, English Literature and History. Pretty Generic. Business studies had seen me undertake a module in renting a house out. Colleagues and contemporary's go into profession because of Parents/family members Initial idea of a different career – farming or law Liked the idea of property development on a different scale

2 Why Edinburgh Napier? RICS Accredited Course
Covered all the aspects I was personally interested in. Chance of living and studying in Edinburgh. It’s hard to qualify exactly why I wanted to go to Edinburgh Napier. Their course simply seemed right. It covered a lot of what I was interested in with agency and property management and investment, particularly the residential side, even though the course itself focused more on commercial development.

3 The Course Year 1 – Construction techniques and maths, property law and architecture. Year 2 – Valuation, Planning, Property Management and Construction Costs Year 3 – Development appraisal, Valuation, Compulsory Purchase and further Planning Year 4 – Valuation, Planning and Dissertation. Also covered – Sustainability, investment and Economics. Year 1 – Foundation year - Introduction to construction. Build techniques of how a standard house was put together, maths of how a building is designed, construction law and building surveying. This was general between all the disciplines of surveying and architecture. Year 2 – Basic valuation techniques – how is a house or rent valued and what is the investment potential of that property. Introduction to town planning and how it affects the cities you live and work in. Architecture styles that a represent. Building surveying looked at simple building defects such as cracks in walls and issues like woodworm or asbestos. Property Management looked at the law of leases and how to apply a lease to a building and the many issues this highlights. Trip to the gyle centre to see how this is put into practice with multi occupiers. Constructions costs is exactly that – how much is that fancy pants building going to cost! Year 3 – Further techniques looking at the potential of that waste land at the end of the street. What could that be developed as and what is the resulting value of the land. We also looked at statutory valuations such as business rates and compulsory purchase legislation and case law. Year 4 – Further planning – case study of the regeneration of craigmillar. Valuation particularly around investment programmes and different valuation techniques such as how to value a business or specialist asset. A multi discipline project also saw us develop ground to the of west Edinburgh with the other disciplines. I completed a dissertation on the decline of the high street in respect to out of town planning even though planning was not my forte.
