1 Physics 3 – Sept 6, 2016 Do Now: P3 Challenge –
A charging bull elephant with a mass of 5240 kg comes directly toward you with a speed of 4.55 m/s. You toss a kg rubber ball at the elephant with a speed of 7.81 m/s before stepping out of the way at the last moment. a) when the ball bounces back toward you, what is its speed? b) How do you account for the fact that the ball’s kinetic energy has increased? c) How many rubber balls would you need to hit the elephant to stop its charge?

2 Objectives/Agenda Objective: Momentum and Collisions Agenda:
Practice for calculation of momentum and/or impulse Practice for 1D collisions, completely inelastic, inelastic, elastic Practice for 2D collisions, completely inelastic, inelastic, elastic Additional problem solving to practice. Assignment: Prepare for Unit 3-5 Mastery Quizzes Thursday

3 Topics Reviewed Sept 6 Football tackle inelastic collision conservation of momentum Bullet fired into a block of wood at rest on frictionless surface, cons of momentum, Football tackle, impulse and force considerations 2D nuclear decay, conservation of momentum, application of vectors 2D elastic collision with billiard balls

4 Today’s Assignment Continue reviewing 2.2, 2.3, 2.4
Prepare for Unit 3-5 Mastery Quizzes Thursday Mastery quizzes are worth 10 points and will be two multiple choice questions with 8 points of problems. (Usually one or two problems). IB materials will be integrated as much as possible. May retake mastery quizzes as needed to reach 8/10 proficiency level. See me during Lunch or after school. Schedule your retakes and give me at least 24 hours to prepare the quiz for you
