1 FINAL PROJECT: LUMINARY
3D DESIGN FINAL PROJECT: LUMINARY

2 THE ASSIGNMENT: In class, we will practice assembling and wiring a light socket and discuss a variety of possibilities. You will then design and construct a source of illumination that achieves the following: Is 3-D-in-the-round Displays a creative/original use of recycled/repurposed/discarded materials Transforms recycled/repurposed/discarded materials Uses translucency to diffuse and/or pieced form to reveal directional light Creates interesting mix of light and shadow Exists as an elegant solution to this functional design assignment Is designed with Geometric, Organic, or Hybrid forms Uses only neutrals, or, judicial use of color Is designed to highlight/emphasize “The Golden Section” Is properly wired and designed to safely prevent bulb-heat from melting/burning materials Is constructed with structurally sound hanging or standing mechanisms Is carefully crafted with attention to detail, finishes, and presentation

3 MEDIA MATERIALS A. Socket, lamp-parts, wire and plug
B. LED bulb (25W recommended to reduce heat) C. Recycled/Repurposed/Found/Discarded materials D. Standing/Hanging mechanisms (also from recycled/repurposed materials)

4 PREPARATION IN CLASS: Wiring demo and practice, discussion, brainstorming, visual presentation(s), problem-solving and trouble-shooting. TEASER: “Light Reading” – Use book pages provided to create a “shade” (fold, pierce, cut, paste, alter) SKETCHBOOK: Sketches, notes, research findings, and found examples READING /RESEARCH: Complete assigned readings & research. Go to your WordPress site. Look at Student Samples and the Visual Archive. Take notes and observe demos. Participate in Discussions. Do on-line visual research: Google Images, Pinterest, Etsy, Lighting Design, etc. Note: All of these will reinforce what you have studied in class; enrich your understanding of the concepts and techniques discussed; as well as provide you with a sense of the possibilities.

5 EVALUATION CRITERIA: MEETS ASSIGNMENT: Pierced/Translucent/Opaque Elegant Solution Recycled/Repurposed Materials Transforms Materials Creative/Original Solution Interesting light/shadow

6 EVALUATION CRITERIA COMPOSITION: Geometric/Organic/Hybrid Use of Neutrals or Color Emphasis Emphasis at Golden Section

7 EVALUATION CRITERIA CRAFT/TECHNIQUE:
Wiring (Correctly wired for safe operation) Finish & presentation Standing/hanging - structural integrity Safety (Burning/melting materials distanced from light/heat)

8 A Gallery of Possibilities:
This is a sampling of lamp designs found on the internet (Google search and Pinterest) Have a look: these are to start you thinking about the possibilities. DO NOT COPY anything. You may “spin-off” from any one of these (or from any lamp designs you discover,) but you MUST make the design your own original form by altering, expanding, re-visioning, or redesigning…make it BETTER! Best Practice: reveal your source and describe how you made it original.

9 Old wood and iron wheels

10 Plastic bottles

11 Broken glass glued on a glass-globe

12 Magnifying lenses

13 Coffee-carriers and binder-clips

14 Concrete cast in plastic bags with rods and cords

15 Discarded stuffed-animal

16 Egg-crates

17 Books and metal-basket

18 One way to suspend a shade

19 Hollowed/cracked logs

20 Broken china pieces

21 Tree-branch (may be fabricated)

22 Tin-cans (these are “tacky” but you can improve!)

23 Discarded tableware

24 Clip-clothespins (you can adapt to something better!)

25 Elegant use of stiff-paper

26 Bad design, but you could use discarded toys…

27 Taking advantage of how transparent glass spreads light

28 This one is all about casting shadows

29 Light-reading: pages from books

30 Hats off to this one!

31 Repurposed washing-machine drum

32 Translucent plastic-cups

33 Repetion/pattern in old sweater can be used advantageiously

34 An old block & tackle…

35 F.Y.I. (For Your Inspiration)

36 …should you be ready to repurpose your board…

37 …and more:

38 Now… begin your search:
Brainstorm lists of materials: translucent, opaque, transparent. Gather and experiment with the above. How is light transmitted or blocked by each? How do materials change light (warm/cool)? How can these use directional light to cast shadows or light-shapes? How can these be “transformed” from their original appearance or function?

39 Design Your Luminary Sketches Push for an original idea! Models
K.I.S.S. Structure/Function: hanging or standing Wiring Bulb: LED (25W recommended) Find an “Elegant Solution” Pay attention to craft and details

40 …the beginning!
