Lighting CHS Interior Design
2
Natural Light Sunlight that enters the house through windows, doors, skylights, etc. North or East—Cool, bluish cast South or West—Warm, orange tones
3
Incandescent Light Light bulb most people use.
Burns about hours.
4
Fluorescent Lighting Lasts up to ten times longer than an incandescent bulb. Use less electricity and produce no damaging heat. Not as homey and comfortable.
5
Halogen Lighting brighter than incandescent bulbs.
Light is more similar to that of sunlight. Bulbs burn whiter than incandescent bulbs.
6
LED Light-Emitting Diodes Last 100,000 hours Consumes less energy
Gives off less heat Initial cost is more
7
Light Temperature Light Temperature is rated in Kelvin
Orange (incandecent) K White (halogen) K Blue (fluorescent) 3000K for warm 4000K for cool
8
Color Rendering Index (CRI)
Indicates how well light from a source will bring out the true color. CRI scale is from 1-100 100=color rendering of daylight The closer the CRI is to 100 the more accurately the light will reproduce color
9
Measuring Light Wattage- The amount of electricity that is used
Lumen- the amount of light a bulb produces Foot-candle- the amount of light a standard candle gives to an object 1 foot away 1 lumen per sq ft=1 foot-candle
10
Properties of Light Reflected light Absorbed light Diffused light
11
Reflected light Light that bounces of a surface
Shiny and light surfaces Try to avoid glare
12
Absorbed Light Light that is drawn in by a surface
Rough textures and dark colors
13
Diffused Light Light that scatters over a large area Light diffusers
Soft appearance Light diffusers Frosted glass Lamp shades
14
Functions of Lighting General lighting Task lighting
Accent/Decorativ e lighting
15
General Lighting Overall lighting or Ambient Lighting- provides a uniform level of light of an entire space. Direct lighting- light shines directly towards an object and provides the most light possible to a specific area Indirect Lighting- lighting directed toward a surface and reflected into the entire room
16
Task Lighting Used in areas where specific activities require more light. For example: reading, cooking, hobbies, working Task lighting can also serve as general lighting
17
Accent Lighting Used to draw attention to specific areas or objects.
