Repetition

Repetition What is repeated in this mandala?
Objective: You will analyze artworks in order to define repetition and apply it to your artwork to create unity. DRILL: (30pts- 5pts each- 5 on time, 5 started) GET AN IPAD AND GET ON EDMODO. What is repeated in this mandala? What does repetition do to help an artwork? What can you repeat in your mandala? Look at Color Scheme ppt. Choose 3-5 colors to use as your color scheme Use each color with colored pencil and collage. (Collage is 10pts extra credit) Make sure you have a design to transfer. Must be finished transfer by the end of class. (40pts)

7
What is the Color Scheme?
9
Add color to selected areas:
10
What is repeated? Color Scheme?
11
What does repetition do?
Makes it match. Ties it together. Unifies the artwork. Looks more whole.
12
What happens without repetition?
Random Not matching Un-related Dis-jointed
13
What can you repeat in your artwork?
Colors Shapes Line Designs Patterns Same Collage pieces ADD VARIETY- Change the size- small medium large
14
Design Option: Repeat with VARIETY
Repeat the same design, but do it In small, medium, and large sizes! SAME DESIGN, DIFFERENT SIZE.
15
Criteria for Mandala Radial Design with Quadrilateral Symmetry
Drawing of bamboo or flower from observation. A variety of lines and shapes in negative space. Shading (Value) in neg. space At least 8 exact fit collage pieces in neg space. Repetition of elements to create Unity Difficulty Creativity- Individual problem solving Craftsmanship- neatness Composition- placement/ arrangement of elements.
16
Color Scheme Look at Color Scheme ppt. Choose 3-5 colors to use as your color scheme. Use each color with colored pencil and collage.
17
Today’s Goal: Repeat the colors. Finish design. Cut it out.
Finish quadrilateral (4-way) transfer. (Trace circle) Trace lines with sharpie. Choose color scheme. Add value (shading) to your spaces with colored pencil. Repeat the colors. Add collage with those colors. Objective: You will analyze artworks in order to define repetition and apply it to your artwork to create unity.

Radial Design Steps Trace a circle.
Draw 2 lines to divide your circle in to 4 sections. Draw a design with lines IN ONE SECTION ONLY. Trace that one section onto half sheet of paper. Cut out that tracing. Flip your tracing over and transfer your pencil lines in the next space in your circle and trace it 3 more times.
21
How to Transfer an Exact Shape for Collage
Trace shape on paper. Put oil pastel on back of tracing. Get your collage paper. Place tracing onto collage paper. Re-draw the lines. The oil pastel will transfer onto new paper. Cut out shape. Glue it in the space. Video Link- minute 7:30 Wiki Mandala Link
22
How do you transfer and cut out an exact shape?
Draw the outlines of the shape darker. Trace with half sheet of copy paper. Put pencil or oil pastel on the back of paper. Put on top of paper that you want to collage. Re-trace with pen or pencil. Oil pastel or pencil will leave an light line. Cut it out. Glue it on.
23
How to fill spaces with MOSAIC pieces:
Look through magazines for a color. Cut it out in square/ rectangle shapes. Put glue in space. Use BACK OF PAINT BRUSH to pick up pieces and place them in their spot. Arrange neatly against edges.
24
Transfer on Good Paper:
Trace bamboo or flower drawing onto tracing paper. Find the center. (measure or line up corners) Flip over design. Place on corner. TAPE IT DOWN. Re-draw on back directly on the lines. Next square- flip over so that it is symmetrical to design next to it. Draw on back directly on lines. Repeat steps #3-6. Go over lines in sharpie.
25
Steps for Mandala: Finish 6x6 bamboo or flower drawing.
Transfer it to big paper 4 times in a radial design. Choose a color scheme. Draw a circle on image. Use gradual shading to show value. REPEAT designs at least once. Add at least 8 collage pieces. Add line and shape designs. (Look at your sketchbook, packets, the internet- zentangles)

Criteria for Mandala Radial Design with Quadrilateral Symmetry
Drawing of bamboo or flower from observation. A variety of lines and shapes in negative space. (8+ designs/ patterns) Shading (Value) in neg. space (8+) At least 8 exact fit collage pieces or mosaic in neg space. Repetition of elements to create Unity Difficulty Creativity- Individual problem solving Craftsmanship- neatness Composition- placement/ arrangement of elements.

Repetition Objective: You will analyze artworks in order to define repetition and apply it to your artwork to create unity. DRILL: What is repeated in this artwork? What is repeated in your artwork? What does repetition do for an artwork? What happens in an artwork if nothing is repeated?

Mandala Vocabulary review
Objective: You will review vocabulary in order to apply in to creating your quadrilateral radial design mandala that repeats value and patterns in the negative space. DRILL: Match the following. Sheet at your table. Glue in. ___Pattern- ___Value- ___Negative Space- ___Mandala- ___Quadrilateral Symmetry- 6. ___Radial Design- Artwork in a circle. Radiates from a central point. C. Repeated design Lightness/ darkness of a color. E. Space outside of shape. F. Four-way symmetry

What do I need to do? What is my goal?
Objective: You will create goals in order to apply planning in drawing your quadrilateral radial design mandala that repeats value and patterns in the negative space. DRILL: Take out your artwork and your sketchbook. 1. Answer these questions. (Do not write them.) 2. Write a goal for the class period What do you need to do? QUESTION YES NO 1. Have you finished your quadrilateral transfer? Traced circle? 2. Have you divided your big spaces to make them smaller? 3. Have you drawn line/ shape designs? 4. Have you shaded with value? 5. 6. Have you repeated a design or shading? Have you thought about a color scheme? 3-5 colors?

Choosing a Color Scheme and Placing the Color
Objective: You will analyze color in mandalas in order to select and apply a color scheme to your artwork. DRILL: List 2-4 colors you want to use on your mandala. Practice shading with one of the colors. Is there a place that you want your color? Does color need to be placed all over the mandala?
