1 STREET SIGNS & TRAFFIC SYMBOLS WHAT THEY MEAN & WHAT TO DO
Lesson 2 Level II STREET SIGNS & TRAFFIC SYMBOLS WHAT THEY MEAN & WHAT TO DO When walking on a street it is important to pay attention to your surroundings. Signs and traffic symbols provide rules to follow to be safe when traveling in public. Rules exist to keep people safe. Today we will learn about the signs and traffic symbols in the community.

2 This is where drivers will expect people to cross.
Lesson 2 Level II Not every area has a crosswalk. Discuss how to pick a safe place to cross. Teach the term and the concept of “scanning” before and while crossing the street. CROSSWALK This is where drivers will expect people to cross. When crossing a street, look in any direction a car could travel. Continue to scan while crossing the street.

3 Lesson 2 Level II CROSSWALK LIGHT Some crosswalks have audible signals. If these exist in your community, familiarize students with the sounds made by these signals and what the different sounds mean. Some crosswalks have a numerical countdown showing how much time is left to cross. If these exist in your community, teach students how this system works. Person Walking: Cross the street when this symbol appears. Red or Orange Hand: Do not cross the street. Red or Orange Hand Flashing or Countdown Flashing: Do not start crossing the street if this symbol is displayed. If in the middle of crossing the street, finish crossing.

4 STREET SIGN & STREET INTERSECTION SIGN
Lesson 2 Level II STREET SIGN & STREET INTERSECTION SIGN As a memory aid, students can take a photo of street signs and use them to learn routes or text images to parents/teachers if they become lost. Street Signs can be different colors. They are often found at street intersections. Street Intersection: This is where two streets cross. When giving directions, it is helpful to state the street intersection.

5 Lesson 2 Level II STOP SIGN This can be a difficult concept for students with ASD to master. Practice safe street crossing skills often. Students need to learn to discriminate between “safe” and “unsafe” street crossing situations. All drivers should come to a complete stop when approaching this sign, but do not count on that. This is a good place for a pedestrian to cross the street. Be sure to be aware of traffic coming from all directions.

6 TRAFFIC LIGHTS Green Light: Drivers may proceed.
Lesson 2 Level II TRAFFIC LIGHTS Green Light: Drivers may proceed. Yellow Light: Drivers slow down/use caution. Red Light: Drivers stop.

7 Lesson 2 Level II Not the best place for a pedestrian to cross a street. If possible, look for a safer place to cross. YIELD SIGN Drivers need to slow down and let crossing traffic go before proceeding.

8 RAILROAD CROSSING SIGN
Lesson 2 Level II RAILROAD CROSSING SIGN Teach safety for crossing tracks. Look both ways before walking across a railroad crossing. Be aware of gates that may move to block pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Lights, bells, and train horns may warn of oncoming trains.

9 Lesson 2 Level II ONE WAY SIGNS This sign indicates that drivers should be going down the road in one direction. Pedestrians can walk in either direction, preferably on the sidewalk. SAFETY TIP: Even though cars should be coming from one direction, look in both directions before crossing.

10 Lesson 2 Level II CONSTRUCTION SIGNS The path might need to be altered because of construction. Be aware of trucks and other moving equipment that could be dangerous. Look for cones and other signs telling pedestrians where it is safe to walk.

11 BUS STOP SIGNS This sign shows people where to wait for the bus.
Lesson 2 Level II Become familiar with the rules of your transit system. Do riders need to wait at a marked bus stop? Or, can they flag the bus down anywhere along the route? If your system has trains or subways, show images of these as well. BUS STOP SIGNS This sign shows people where to wait for the bus. In most systems, the bus will not stop if a person is not waiting.
