2 Digital tattoos – come in many designs
So exactly what is a digital tattoo? It’s made up of: Your online personal information Your online behaviour – what etiquette / protocols you follow Your online content – images, videos, tweets, s, both those you access and those you create Your online activity - what you create, upload, download, share, tag, sign up for, log into. This online activity includes , text messaging, social media, digital content you create and using others’ content, online purchasing, subscriptions In particular we will focus on using social media and what that means for you professionally. Visitor: use the web as a tool – searching for information then leaving the web when we’ve found what we need Resident: living out a portion of our lives online – leave a social trace – opinions, comments, blogs, photos, video sharing – these activities are linked to our persona. It’s your profile as a resident which contributes to your digital tattoo. Why should we be concerned about our digital tattoo? 3 Getting to know you If we searched for you online, what would we find?
If we were to search for you online what would we learn about you? You might think this is an extreme example of what a potential employer might find. Employers are increasingly looking at their potential employees online profiles. Your personal and professional profiles are closely entwined. That’s why it’s so important to effectively manage what you do online. In New Zealand over 2M people use Facebook every day, If we searched for you online, what would we find?

So, what are the challenges with creating a good digital tattoo? Maintaining Privacy both yours and others Protecting information Taking control of your online presence Understanding the implications of everything you do online and mitigating your own risk Let’s start by looking at some scenarios to illustrate different situations involving online information. 5 Activity: Think/Pair/Share
Read through your scenario Discuss with your neighbour: What principle does the scenario highlight? How could you prevent this situation from occurring? Share your discussion with another pair who have the same scenario Report back Scenario Activity: Think, Pair, Share Read through the scenario you have, discuss a possible solution with your neighbour, then turn to another pair and share your scenario and your solution.

Use online help and guidelines Check your organisation’s social media guidelines Seek professional development in social media Tools: Netsafe NZ Moz - Beginners guide to social media Mashable Guide to social media The EU passed legislation to require that Google provide an online form where people can request their name be removed from search results. eg Google changed YouTube access to require a Google+ account which they consequently removed.
