Outgrowth: Middle School STEM Partnership
Arnold Science Magnet Academy, Richards Middle School, Rothschild Middle School, and Aaron Cohn Middle School in order to develop programs at the middle school level that engage students in STEM. July 2016, STEM faculty from CSU in the areas of UTeach Columbus, Earth and Space Science; Counseling, Foundations, and Leadership; and the TSYS School of Computer Science have met with principals from Arnold Science Magnet Academy, Richards Middle School, Rothschild Middle School, and Aaron Cohn Middle School in order to develop programs at the middle school level that engage students in STEM.

Columbus State Hosts Two STEM Camps 2017
Summer Camp for Middle School Students in broad field STEM New Summer Camp funded by NSA Grant

Broad Field STEM Camp A third initiative focused on middle school students leverages Noyce Grant and CSU donor funding Dr. Kimberly Shaw and Dr. Tim Howard have developed a series of summer camps focused on bringing middle school students from the Muscogee County School District and other middle school students to the CSU campus for week long intensive STEM camps that have proven to be successful in the past

UTeach Columbus has also hosted workshops this year for science teachers in Muscogee County, and in Chattahoochee County on 5E inquiry lessons. Engage Explore Explain Elaborate Evaluate

Explore: give students time to work together; listen to student ideas, support without giving answers yet Explain: Encourage students to explain concepts in their own words, teacher highlights important ideas Elaborate: ask students to apply content in a new situation or test added ideas Evaluate: ask questions that provide insight, distribute questions so that all are accountable
