Phase 4: Manage Deployment
2
High level considerations
Deployment & Management Considerations High level considerations Power for charging devices Wireless connectivity Update and software deployment logistics Device physical security (lockers?) Provision for ‘forgotten’ or problem devices

Manual Automated Deployment & Management Considerations
Initial configuration options OOBE – Manual configuration Instructions for end users Batch configuration MultiPoint Server set up Semi-automated centralized configuration Active Directory + GPO MBAM WSUS Image based configuration +System Center OSD (ZTI) +MDT (LTI) +Partner imaging solutions Key Points: You could choose to not configure anything and leave the end user to configure the devices – manual updates You could choose to manually configure devices, might be the best option for MultiPoint server solutions Active Directory with GPO can manage a lot of settings, but domain joining will still be required MDT is point in time, SCCM continues to manage the devices after the image has been deployed MDT is free, SCCM is not Partner solution e.g. Ghost Manual Automated

Initial configuration
Which form factor is most appropriate for students, teachers and staff? Initial configuration Device Management Classroom Management Key Points: Logistics Four device deployment considerations
10
Unmanaged to managed Unmanaged—Users can install applications, change settings; little to no management tools used Somewhat managed—Some management tools are used, but light on process and policy Moderately managed—Tools and good processes and policies, but users can install software and change at least some settings Locked down and well-managed— Intense use of tools, established processes and policies in place, users are locked down and cannot install software or change critical settings
11
Device Management How will the device settings be configured?
How will the devices be protected from malware? How will Operating System updates and patches be deployed to the device? How will Apps and software be deployed to the devices? Do the devices need to be wiped in case of loss of theft?
12
Managing Windows devices
Governance Light Control Full Control Exchange ActiveSync Mobile Device Management via OMA-DM Enterprise Management Windows 8 provides choices Choose by device based on scenario or capabilities needed Consider employee versus organization-owned, BYOD, connectivity Organizations may choose all three
13
The more you trust a device, the more access you can give the device
Unregistered Registered MDM Enrolled Fully Managed Publish to users (EAS) Yes Publish Work Folders to users Conditional access based on user, device, location Block Device Only Audit logging and monitoring Unified Device Management Unified Application Management Selective data wipe Compliance reporting Group policy and login scripts OS deployment and imaging Configuration Management Patch Management Anti-malware management Full application management Bitlocker management

15
What is classroom management software?
Students are using PCs and mobile devices in your classrooms. Classroom Management software enables the teacher to have control and management of what students are doing on these devices Usual features and requirements include: Being able to view student screens to see what they are doing Being able to control what students are doing on their devices Being able to distribute and collect files from the teacher device to student devices Being able to communicate via IM or polls with students Being able to control internet access Many, many other features

Large scale device deployment logistics
18
Device deployment—logistics
Transport logistics to schools Unboxing and recycling Teacher distribution Student distribution (parents?) Start up support User support (day1/week1) DEAD ON ARRIVAL? Software/hardware/drivers Device deployment—logistics
19
Initial set up logistics
Wired connectivity Desk space Amount of rooms per school Security of rooms Power supply Physical device labelling Progress tracking
20
Designing and Implementing Technologies that effectively support learning
How do I choose the most appropriate device for education? How are the devices going to be deployed, managed and controlled? Is the network infrastructure appropriate for a large scale device deployment? How will the technical solution be supported?
