1 Leadership Leadership Styles

2 LEADERSHIP STYLES: Good leaders are effective leaders because they recreate resonance. They speak authentically about their values, directions, and priorities and resonate with the emotions of surrounding people. Resonance: attuned to people’s feelings and emotions – move them in a positive emotional direction!

3 Leadership Style #1: THINK: VISIONARY “Come with me”
This style is most appropriate when an organization needs a new direction. Characteristics: Inspires, believes in vision, explains how and why people’s efforts contribute! Goal: to move people towards a new set of shared dreams. “Visionary leaders articulate where a group is going, but not how it will get there – setting people free to innovate, experiment, take calculated risks” Think of at least one leader (can be someone at CMHS or apolitical/historic/sports figure) who is a visionary leader. How has their visionary style led to success? What about their style makes them fit the “visionary type”? Leadership styles – Daniel Goleman; has identified 6 styles NOT types!

4 Leadership Style #2: THINK: COACHING: “TRY THIS”
Characteristics: Listens, helps people identify their strengths and weaknesses, encourages and counsels. Goals: developing individuals, showing them how to improve their performance, and helping to connect their goals to the goals of the organization. Coaching works best, “with employees who show initiative and want more professional development.” “TRY THIS” Think of at least one leader (can be someone at CMHS or apolitical/historic/sports figure) who you think employs a “coaching” style of leadership. How has their coaching style led to success? What about their style makes them fit the “coaching” style? But it can backfire if it’s perceived as “micromanaging” an employee, and undermines his or her self-confidence

5 Leadership Style #3: THINK: Affiliative “People come first!”
Think of at least one leader (can be someone at CMHS or apolitical/historic/sports figure) who you think employs an “affiliative” style of leadership. How has their coaching style led to success? What about their style makes them fit the “affiliative” style? Characteristics: Promotes harmony, nice, empathetic, boosts moral, solves conflict!! Goals: creates people connections and thus harmony within the organization. It is a very collaborative style which focuses on emotional needs over work needs. This approach is particularly valuable “healing rifts and getting through stressful situations.” The democratic style is most effective when the leader needs the team to buy into or have ownership of a decision, plan, or goal, or if he or she is uncertain and needs fresh ideas from qualified teammates. It is not the best choice in an emergency situation, when time is of the essence for another reason or when teammates are not informed enough to offer sufficient guidance to the leader.

6 Leadership Style #4: THINK: Democratic: “What do you think?”
Think of at least one leader (can be someone at CMHS or apolitical/historic/sports figure) who you think employs an “democratic” style of leadership. How has their coaching style led to success? What about their style makes them fit the “democratic” style? Characteristics: Awesome listener, team worker, collaborator, influencer! Goals: Forge consensus through participation! This group draws on people’s knowledge and skills, and creates a group commitment to the resulting goals. This approach is particularly valuable “when the direction the organization should take is unclear, and the leader needs to tap the collective wisdom of the group The democratic style is most effective when the leader needs the team to buy into or have ownership of a decision, plan, or goal, or if he or she is uncertain and needs fresh ideas from qualified teammates. It is not the best choice in an emergency situation, when time is of the essence for another reason or when teammates are not informed enough to offer sufficient guidance to the leader.

7 Leadership Styles Pacesetting DO! “Do as I do, NOW!”
Characteristics: Strong drive to achieve, high personal standards, low empathy and collaboration, micromanaging. Goal: In this style, the leader sets high standards for performance. He or she is “obsessive about doing things better and faster, and asks the same of everyone.” When to be used: To get quick results form a highly motivated and competent team. Think of at least one leader (can be someone at CMHS or a political, historic, or sports figure) who you think employs an “pacesetting” style of leadership. How has their coaching style led to success? What about their style makes them fit the “pacesetting” style? “Do as I do, NOW!” SHOULD BE USED SPARINGLY b/c it can undercut morale and make people feel as if they are failing. Can overwhelm team members & squash innovation! Works best with a highly motivated, skilled team.

8 Leadership Style #6: THINK: Commanding: “Do what I tell you!”
Characteristics: This is classic model of “military” style leadership ; demands immediate compliance; threatening Goals: Provide clear direction in time of crisis or control a teammate when everything else has failed! This approach is particularly valuable “In a crisis, to kick start a turnaround, or with problem employees”. Most often used but is the least effective. *Overall, has a negative impact on organization. “Do what I tell you!” Think of at least one leader (can be someone at CMHS or apolitical/historic/sports figure) who you think employs an “commanding” style of leadership. How has their coaching style led to success? What about their style makes them fit the “commanding” style? The democratic style is most effective when the leader needs the team to buy into or have ownership of a decision, plan, or goal, or if he or she is uncertain and needs fresh ideas from qualified teammates. It is not the best choice in an emergency situation, when time is of the essence for another reason or when teammates are not informed enough to offer sufficient guidance to the leader.
