1. Background The current College Park Elementary School/Turnbull Child Development Center facility was built in 1949 as a middle school, and was converted over the years to accommodate various needs The existing school offers special Mandarin Immersion and Mandarin Pre-school programs, Gate Classes and it is expected to increase in enrolment The entire property includes a little over 11 acres, and the two facilities use approximately 7 of the 11 acres The campus consists of 4 main wings in need of a comprehensive modernization The LGI is large for the existing elementary school because it was originally built for a middle school A portable 6-plex built prior to 1990, a portable 3-plex which previously housed Boys and Girls Club and the District’s Counseling center are in poor condition and need to be demolished The Child Development Center is housed in 7 portables without interior restrooms Student safety issues exist due to the District’s current bus pick-up area on Poplar Street. These issues may only increase with the projected student population growth.
