1 2-2 Properties of Water H2O

2 Water is Polar Oxygen has a slightly negative charge.
- Oxygen has a slightly negative charge. Each hydrogen has a slightly positive charge.

3 Hydrogen bonds form between the water molecules

4 Drawing of the Hydrogen Bond

5 Water droplet clings to leaf against gravity
Cohesion of water Cohesion describes an attraction between molecules of the same substance. Water Strider bug walks on water due to cohesion of the water molecules Water droplet clings to leaf against gravity

6 Between molecules Between substances

7 Adhesion of water Adhesion is an attraction between molecules of different substances.

8 CAPILLARY ACTION This force allows water molecules to stick together as they rise. Because of capillary action, water is able to: a.) Move up the narrow roots of plants into the stem and leaves. b.) Move upward in a very thin glass tube.

9 SUMMARY OF WATER’S PROPERTIES
1.) is a molecule made of 2 elements, but 3 atoms. 2.) is a polar molecule. 3.) molecules can form hydrogen bonds with other water molecules. 4.) exhibits forces of adhesion and cohesion. 5.) exhibits a force called capillary action.

10 Water Strider Lab This short lab is broken up into 5 parts.
USE A PENCIL! This short lab is broken up into 5 parts. Your worksheet (WKSH) describes the procedure for each part. You will work in groups of 4. To save time, you will all do part 1. Then two of you will do parts 2 &3, and the other two will do parts 4&5. Record your results and share them. SAVE EACH LAB ACTIVITY so you can explain it to the other members of your group.

11 Scientific Paragraph 1) Start with a topic sentence.
In science, we base all answers on evidence and cut straight to the point. (Scientific writing is not flowery or ornate.) The scientific paragraph will be used when writing conclusion statements in lab reports and when answering essay questions. 1) Start with a topic sentence. 2) Include at least 3 supporting details. 3) End by re-stating how your evidence supported your topic sentence.
