2. Course Description
In Australia at War, we explore the experiences of Australians in WW1 and the effects of the war on Australia.
Why did Australia join in WW1? Why did men and women volunteer for service?
What happened at Gallipoli, the Western Front and the Middle East?
We explore many famous battles such as: Villers Bretonneux, Fromelles, Beersheba and Lone Pine.
What is the ‘Anzac Spirit’? Is it still relevant today?
What is our Anzac heritage?

Examining causes of WW1
Mapping of Allied countries and the Central Powers in 1914
Chronological study of Australians involvement from 1914 – 1918
Analysis of Gallipoli campaign
Examination of the Western Front
Local study of fallen soldier and construction of a movie based on this person using Movie Maker
Study of the Lighthorse and the part they played at Gallipoli and the Middle East
Working on ‘Premier’s Spirit of Anzac Prize’ entries and ‘Simpson Prize’ entries where appropriate
Creation of a WW1 propaganda poster
Creation of a profile of a Victoria Cross Winner from WW1 (Australian Imperial forces)
Completion of an in depth research task
Test of all material studied in class

4. Subject pathway….
Studying Australia at War – World War One, sets a sound foundation for studying Year 10 History based on World War Two.

5. Extra activities/costs?
A full day trip is planned where possible to the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance where you will attend an interactive education session. You may also visit the ‘Love & Sorrow Exhibition at the Melbourne Museum. It will cost $60 for the day.
