Economic Causes: Spain was an agricultural economy
Agriculture was main source of employment Many fundamental problems made it inefficient Spain Was neutral in WW1 which led to; a large economic boom Increase in exports There were still inflation and shortages Working class' living standards dropped Militancy rate increased Major economic problems in the 1920s lead to violent conflict between employers and employees particularly in industrial cities such as Catalonia

Political Causes: Weakness of the government
King was the head of state Appointed a prime minister who commanded the majority in the parliament (Cortes) Although the Cortes was elected by the male population, true power was held by the wealthy oligarchs and political control shifted between their different cliques Two main parties Conservatives, liberals No real difference Elections were rigged or decided by corruption

More Political Causes in the Army
Role of the Spanish army -Believed to be the protector of the nation therefore had the right and duty to intervene in politics if a crisis occurred -Intervened in 1820, 1871 and 1923 -It had not acted to save the king in 1931 (lead to exile) -Intervened again in Second Republic and lastly in 1936 -This last intervention lead to civil war -Army was unpopular with the people -Reputation for brutality -Expensive and heavy taxes to maintain -Proved to be ineffective -Lost the Spanish empire in 19th century -Lost the war with America in 1898 -Struggled to control Morocco between 1906 and 1926 -Needed reform as it was too big and had too many officers
7
Social Causes of the Spanish Civil War:
Great extremes of wealth and poverty caused severe social tensions Regionalism – the Catalan and Basques wanted to be different as they were ethnically and culturally different. This annoyed the Nationalists who thought that Spain should remain the same and not change. The church: The Catholic Church had great power and wealth. And with this came much influence. The Church basically had a monopoly of education. The Roman Catholic Church used Propaganda to influence the people. Insufficient Food. Constant Migrations due to work. Work was seasonal
8
More Social Causes: Apart from north there was limited modernization in the 19th century Limited by endemic poverty Workers in towns faced… Lower wages Long hours Unregulated working conditions Poor housing Little in the way of welfare provision
9
