Les Verbes Réguliers en -er au Présent
Verbes: page 73-74
2
Regular –er verbs follow a pattern.
The infinitive of a verb ends in –er: danser donner chanter écouter parler rigoler
3
In order to make a verb “agree” with its subject, the ending must be changed, or conjugated.
We conjugate verbs in English, too! : I walk. You walk. He walks.
4
Conjugating verbs in French is more complicated:
To form the “stem” of a regular –er verb, drop the –er ending: Infinitive Stem parler parl- travailler travaill- écouter écout- aimer aim-
5
Then, add the following endings to the “stem” :
(je) –e (nous) –ons (tu) –es (vous) –ez (on/il/elle) –e (ils/elles) –ent
6
For example: je parle nous parlons tu parles vous parlez
Parler je parle nous parlons tu parles vous parlez on/il/elle parle ils/elles parlent
7
Nous parlons avec le prof.
We speak/We are speaking with the teacher. Vous écoutez les cassettes. You listen/You are listening to the cassettes. Je ne regarde pas la télé. I do not watch/I am not watching television. Ils n’aiment pas les maths. They do not like/They are not liking math.
