RF Distribution System (RFDS) supports
Most RFDS components are standard and can be manufactured from a specification Whereas the support structures required some design input Analysed the structure according to BS 5950, the results showed the maximum stresses the structure were below the elastic limit of the material 5.3m 7.4m 9.9m
4
Evolving design and further analysis
The problem of being the first Among the first major items to be installed, this allowed other departments plenty of time to view the design and consider it as an option to mount their equipment Sudden requirement changes… They were asked if the structure could take additional 8 tons, doubling the anticipated load … and their consequences With this load increase the yield stress limit was exceeded, based on elastic design method the structure is unacceptable
5
Eurocode 3: Design of steel structures
Use the appropriate standard Approved by the European committee for standardisation in 2004, Eurocode 3 supersedes BS 5950 A comprehensive standard Comprises of 20 documents dealing with the different aspects of steel structure design Eurocode 3 saves money More economical use of materials than the working stress approach adopted by older codes because the strength of steel beyond the yield stress is fully utilised
6
Limit State Design Load Diagram Elastic Limit Limit State ? Once a plastic hinge has developed in a beam, the additional load will be distributed to other structural members. This will continue until sufficient hinges developed to result in the collapse of the whole structure

Lessons learned Cumbersome meshing
Quirky, unpredictable meshing with Icepak, different to other FE meshing. It is extremely slow with large models extending the learning curve Lack of maturity Niche market software has many more bugs than widely used products Be careful With CFD, unlike mechanical FE, it's best to start with low expectations.

Engineering Knowledge Management
Retain and Re-Use Data Search, meta-data extraction and reporting capabilities allow initiation of new design projects based on knowledge learned from previous design attempts Standardise on Best Practices Companies are adopting progressive approaches to eliminate or reduce manual rework. Their goal is consistent and repeatable processes, whenever possible, to reduce costs and improve productivity. Existing Systems EKM is a complementary solution to existing systems (PDM/PLM). Integration to commercial PDM systems is available. Integration with the ANSYS Suite You can open and save ANSYS Workbench projects directly in EKM, which facilitates updating the local copy and versioning on current projects. The tool extracts project-level meta-data to automatically generate an extensive Workbench project report that summarizes component systems and all related aspects. You can use data to display, identify, search and re-use archived Workbench projects.

Conclusion Using the appropriate standard saves money
Eurocode 3 supersedes BS 5950 and its failure mode is not yield stress but limit state design, with consequent money savings Optimisation with ANSYS Parametric optimisation is a powerful tool for problems with many input parameters and many design requirements but it requires a lot of computational power Niche CFD solutions Icepack is a powerful tool for CFD but not as mature as other ANSYS products Not another PDM FE Analysis can be managed by EKM that is complementary to PDM and integrates with it and enables engineers to retain and re-use data, and to standardise the best practices
