Personal Telco Project is a Federal Tax Exempt 501c3 and a Oregon Non-profit organization. We are a volunteer group of Portlanders who believe that networking technology is empowering. We have turned houses, apartments and public locations such as parks and coffee shops into free wireless hot spots across Portland. Come join us build and use a city wide free community network.

All Nodes Must be listed on the node map. Must be on most of the time.

Gateway Node The Node MUST provide an AccessPoint (ie. run in InfrastructureMode) and MUST NOT restrict access via WEP, 802.1x or any other mechanism. The AccessPoint MUST broadcast its ESSID and have it set to The ESSID MUST be all lower case. The Network MUST provide open and zero cost access to the internet and/or the "wireless cloud". The Node MUST serve IP addresses to clients via DHCP or IPv6 autoconfiguration. The AccessPoint MUST be accessible from a public space (ie. can't require trespass or breaking and entering to get a usable signal). The Node SHOULD run a CaptivePortal with the NodeSplashPages and display the Acceptable Use Policy.

What is an Access Point An AccessPoint is a physical device which allows wireless users to access a wired network. APs are designed to act as the wireless equivelent of an ethernet hub or switch. They allow multiple wireless clients (NICs) to connect to one central hub in InfrastructureMode (BSS). From the physical connectivity point of view, they act as a star network. Every wireless client talks to every other one via the AccessPOINT.

What is a Captive Portal? A way to either have users of your node login or agree to a Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) before getting access. The PTP uses NotCatAuth in many of its nodes to allow users to gain access by simply reading the PTP AUP and clicking on a I Agree button. We never ask for a name, login or personal information.
