3 Startup From The Bottom: Here Is How Uber Started Out
The story of Uber takes us back to 2008 when the co-founders then, still friends and not aware they’ll be at the head of one of the most successful startups up to date, were attending LeWeb conference in Paris. Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp, like old pals, were complaining about the many crappy things we all have to deal with in life, including finding a cab when we’re packed with luggage under the rain and no taxi seems to pass by. It seemed like The Eiffel Tower or Paris’ finest restaurants weren't enough to distract them from a brilliant idea trapped under the grey clouds, because next thing you know, these two “uber” kids were already brainstorming, thinking about ways to solve this global issue of finding cars at the right place, on the right time. Though by now only two things were certain: the solution had to be mobile and fast. Garrett took the lead and went on playing around with a couple of ideas, prototyping several solutions and engineering a mobile app for the iPhone that would revolutionize the very idea of getting around. It didn’t take long before Travis joined the ride to work with him on what would later be known as, Uber. Fast forward to January 2010 and Uber was already rolling a couple of black cars in the city of New York to simply test the service out. With just a few cars and even fewer people knowing about the startup at the time, Uber proved to be a hit. Soon after San Francisco joined in to host Uber, and the rest is history.

6 Effective Communication
Your ability to communicate will affect your ability to influence others, your ability to develop relationships, and ultimately, your ability to produce results. Without good communications skills it’s impossible to effectively sell. And as the founder of your company, you’ll find yourself constantly selling. Selling your vision to prospective investors. Selling your products to potential clients. Selling your employees on why they shouldn’t jump ship when things inevitably get rough. Success of your business will depend on your ability to communicate your ideas and vision to get people to buy into your brand. Risk Tolerance As an entrepreneur, you must be comfortable with risk. If something feels risky, do you focus on the likelihood of failure? Or the potential for reward? Sensing risk may just be a sign that you are onto an opportunity – one that’s worth exploring or seeing through to the end. Most people sense risk and stop. They never find out how many opportunities lie on the other side of that risk. Entrepreneurs take risks. And they take action. Smart entrepreneurs are able to identify and mitigate business risk. But when the time comes, they step out of their comfort zone and engage risk by taking action.

7 Characteristics of a Successful Fashion Entrepreneur
Passion: There are countless books, seminars, and MBA programs that teach how to be successful in the business world. But this is the one characteristic that only you can bring. Determination: Success doesn’t happen overnight. A business takes time to start and grow. And even more time to be successful. Resilience: Successful fashion entrepreneurs are not afraid of failure. Confidence: Confidence is part of any entrepreneur’s success. You must be confident in yourself – that you can manage what might come your way. Flexibility: Fashion is a fast-paced industry, constantly changing. As an entrepreneur you need to be flexible – able to adapt to the changing demands of your business. Vision: As the creator of a brand, you must possess a clear vision of what you want your brand to be. Your vision defines who you are, what you want to do and where you want to go.

9 Steve Madden A man who wears many hats - and shoes, Steve Madden cannot be described in one word. He is an entrepreneur, an award winning designer, a business titan and of course, a family man. He's walked the line both there and back without forgetting his humble beginnings or his core consumer, resulting in millions of adoring fans worldwide. Considered the fashion footwear mogul of the 21st century, Madden has an innate sense of what's hot, what's next, what's exciting and more importantly, how this will translate to his consumer. Inspired by rock and roll, fused with an urban edge, Madden creates shoes that are innovative and fun. In 1990 with a mere $1100 in the bank, Madden swiftly followed his intuition to create the next big trend, anticipate consumer needs and subsequently deliver collections that were both cutting edge and highly saleable. Madden channeled his creative energy to produce a variety of silhouettes and vibrant styles in his Queens-based factory. Quickly his dream became reality and the Steve Madden brand was born. Madden's expertise in trend forecasting has propelled him to the top of his field. Relying on sheer instinct, he transformed a footwear relic into a footwear phenomenon when he introduced a new amped up platform shoe in the early s. Inspired by his favorite rock stars of the 70s, Madden's now famous chunky platform shoes were one of the biggest success stories of the time and became a Madden hallmark.

13 entrepreneur/#14696a8f5f37 Over $1 Million In Sales For The 15-Year-Old Entrepreneur Behind Fish Flops Madison Robinson has sold 60,000 pairs of her Fish Flops flip flops for $25 apiece. Could she be a future FORBES 400 lister? Well, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Still, a 15-year-old burgeoning captain of industry from Galveston, Texas named Madison Robinson (or “Maddie,” as she prefers) is on track to make a serious profit in the clothing industry. Robinson’s company, Fish Flops, makes apparel for children and it all began with her designs for flip flops which she’s been thinking up herself since coming up with the idea in Most recently, pitching her wares to retailers, her company has signed a deal with both Macy’s and Nordstrom . You’ve got to hand it to the young lady for knowing to strike while the iron’s hot. Her product line has exploded into an all-out brand, featuring hats, t-shirts, kids books she writes herself and what appears to be an upcoming video game or app that takes place under the sea. The shoes go for about $25 a pair and Robinson has sold more than 60,000, according to a report. Word is she’s designing a new line for adults for Macy’s. Her ascension came with help from her father, Dan, and good ol’ family financing (the best angels there are).   As far as cash pileup is concerned, right now the money Robinson is making is being set aside to pay for her college education (apparently she has already earned enough to pay for schooling) with the guardian to her mini fortune being her father.

14 Teen, John Ferguson, Puts Free Shoes on Hundreds of Those Who Have None “YOUTH SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP” Putting shoes on hundreds of those who have none sounds complicated. Especially when the shoeless live half a world away. But Lakota East freshman John Ferguson simply saw a need and is working to fill it. After John's mother Chen, a local university Professor, returned from an African trip two years ago, the images she described to her 14-year-old son of impoverished villages and the crying need of basic footwear for the children who lived there haunted him.

18 Some people think that money is the most essential factor in promoting happiness. Do you agree or disagree? What other factors contribute towards happiness? thousands Money is considered by many people to be one of the most important contributing factors towards happiness. In my opinion, I agree that money is definitely important. One cannot really take any steps or do anything without having some money first. Nevertheless, certain aspects in life can play a vital role in creating happiness, which will eventually lead to financial prosperity. First of all, one way that people can gain happiness is through their work. For instance, a doctor doing volunteer work in underdeveloped countries may have very little money, but the reward of helping people brings happiness in itself. In other words, happiness can be found through job satisfaction, entrepreneurship, internships and volunteer work. An amazing example of this is Dr. Ghulam Fayez of Operation Smile - a worldwide organization which helps people with life changing surgeries correcting cleft palates and cleft lips. A Plastic surgeon in Pakistan, Doctor Ghulam has performed over 10,000 volunteer surgeries in Pakistan and around the world. His colleagues at Operation Smile always comment on his commitment and passion towards his patients. For Dr. Ghulam, happiness is using his skills and medical training to help others. In addition, Dr. Ghulam recently published a paper: “A Model Humanitarian Cleft Mission: 312 Cleft Surgeries in 7 Days,”, which won a gold medal in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Global Open Competition. He will be recognized at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 25, Hence, because of Dr. Ghulam's good deeds, he now has even more opportunities around the world as the winner of several international prizes and awards. Second of all, another factor influencing happiness is simply having a positive attitude in life, and making good use of your time. For example, several volunteers who complete any volunteer mission, especially with the United Nations or Operation Smile, have commented on how they have discovered a new career direction in life. Whether they were employed, unemployed, or thinking of changing careers entirely, volunteering helped show them a new path, and helped them with a fresh new start in life. Having a sense of direction in life is an amazing source of happiness. Nevertheless, one must be patient and never give up. In conclusion, dreams only come true when people take positive action. If more people strived in life towards positive use of their time, through volunteering, interning or entrepreneurship, then both happiness, and money, would eventually naturally follow.

19 Some people believe that good leaders are born, whereas others hold the opinion that leadership qualities could be obtained during life. How does one obtain good leadership qualities?Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. It is often stated that some people are “natural-born leaders”. However, many people assume that a good leader may achieve leadership skills due to experience. Personally, I am convinced that a leader means the ability to understand the needs of the public. leadership qualities are achieved throughout one's lifetime. On the one hand, leadership qualities may be triggered when there is a crisis which demands individuals to step forward and take responsibility. These characteristics occur in response to challenges. For example, the CEO of Eventtus.com, is an extremely successful entrepreneur. She stated in a meeting with US President Obama that her road to success was very difficult. Although she has faced her fair share of ups and downs, she stated that a “persistent and strong passion” was responsible for her success. Hence, based on these characteristics, she is seen as a leader in her business field. In addition, leaders are often faced with difficult choices. In order to have their business succeed, they must have life experience, sound decision making skills, and the ability to “act quickly”. Hence, it is at this time their leadership abilities emerge, and are “put into action”. Furthermore, it is believed that a leader should respect others through teamwork and cooperation. It means  they should manage and embrace people from various backgrounds. Moreover, a leader should always treat others equally regardless of their background and social status. Consequently, if a leader can always be fair to others, they will be known as a “just leader”. On the other hand, some people feel leaders are born with certain qualities as per many people’s opinion. In my point of view, I believe that leadership is a quality which is related to someone’s experience, personality, motivation and ambition. It is not unusual that we have so many great leaders in history who stepped forward to help others. Leadership is a quality that can learned with time and experience. In conclusion, I strongly believe leadership skills are possible in any human being. Even though it takes time and effort, with hard-work, patience and motivation, anyone can become a respected leader in their field. 19

20 Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: The most important characteristic of a leader are good communication skills. A leader can be described as a person who has a social influence. While I certainly agree communication skills are the foundation of a respectable leader, I personally believe there are many characteristics that are necessary as well. On the one hand, having excellent communication abilities in general is critical to success nowadays. For example, modern day entrepreneurs have the responsibility of informing, persuading and motivating others. Communication skills clearly play an important role in leadership. That is why people with such skills avoid language barriers and misunderstandings in discussions, conversations and meetings. Moreover, expressing ideas clearly is important for every leader because this ability can help win support for a proposal. For instance, entrepreneurs around the world require funding for their start-ups. Without being able to "convince" investors, they will be unable to continue with their project. Hence, communication  skills are critical to a successful future and making dreams come true. On the other hand, I would argue there are many people who are good at communication and even rhetoric, but only some of them are leaders. First of all, one can be a leader if one is optimistic and intelligent. Hence, the foundation of leading others lies in  optimism and perseverance. On the way to their success, leaders will often come across obstacles, and require an optimistic attitude to find ways to overcome such difficulties. As a result, their optimism inspires others, which is where success lies. In addition, intelligence is also important for leaders. Without intelligence, leaders could not find the keys to solve complicated problems. To illustrate, in order to speed up economic growth, it is not enough for the eloquent President Obama to deliver good speeches. It also requires President Obama's intelligence to tackle the fiscal cliff issue and other methods to reduce unemployment. In conclusion, it seems there are some characteristics that are equally important as communication skills in order to become a leader. Overall, whether in business or entrepreneurship, experience has proven it is difficult for a person to become a leader without optimism and intelligence as well. 20

21 As most people spend a major part of their adult life at work, job satisfaction is an important element of individual well-being. How does one achieve job satisfaction? Give reasons for your answer and give any relevant examples or experiences you have to support your answer. People contribute a large proportion of their adult life to their career, especially when the retirement age has been postponed in many countries. Job satisfaction is the most important element of psychological well-being, because of its significant role in people’s lives. Through entrepreneurship, internships, volunteer work, or complete career changes at any age, people should continuously search for “purpose” and happiness in life. First of all, whether the job makes you happy is an important aspect. if someone is unhappy in a certain profession they should search for alternative careers. the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme and Operation Smile, recently recognized the achievements of exceptional young people who, as volunteers, have brought transformational change to their communities, and in their personal lives as well. For example, several returned volunteers have been honored for their role in providing education to marginalized children in areas with poor infrastructure. Many of them were unhappy in their careers or unsure what to study in College. To illustrate, Jonathan Amarilla of Operation Smile, stated online that at 15 years old, he was unsure of what to study in College. However, after becoming an Operation Smile volunteer, he now plans on becoming a doctor in order to continue working with Operation Smile in the future. Hence, job satisfaction does not simply happen for most people; one must “search” for it Second of all, and equally important, is salary which can influence people’s job satisfaction significantly. Although, in theory, job satisfaction is not supposed to be measured by salary, in reality, a decent income enables people to meet their needs. Nevertheless, nowadays with entrepreneurship, globalization and the internet, the new trend is to combine entrepreneurship with your interests and eventually turn it into a career in order to increase your earnings and happiness. For example, Mason Wartman was a successful investment banker in New York. Unhappy with his banking career, he decided to open a pizza business in Philadelphia and become a self-employed entrepreneur. Using the “pay it forward” method, he now combines a successful business with charity which helps homeless people everyday. Hence, opening a business is always an option which could help others while helping yourself. In conclusion, job satisfaction is important to everyone. I personally believe that most people these days are not interested in doing the same job for the rest of their life. Technology and globalization have given us opportunities our ancestors never had. By constantly “searching”, exploring internship opportunities, attending business conferences, volunteering etc., people can discover hidden talents and skills, which will ultimately lead to a sense of job satisfaction and purpose in life.

23 Jonathan Amarilla: From a student volunteer to a medical career- Jonathan Amarilla, Student Volunteer  My journey with Operation Smile began when I was 15 years old. At that age, I didn’t have much motivation or direction in my life until a friend invited me to an after-school Operation Smile student club meeting. I didn’t understand then what I was getting into, but the more I showed up and learned about the plight of the children here in my own country of Paraguay who needed help, the more I fell in love with the the work of Operation Smile. Later that year, I was honored to be a student volunteer on my first medical mission in Paraguay -- an experience that would forever impact my career path. On the first day of that medical mission, I was shocked to see all these kids and adults suffering from cleft lip and cleft palate. Many covered their faces with their hands or scarves. It was painful to watch them hiding, as if they were ashamed. It saddened me to see these kids who have never smiled, who have been shunned from their communities and bullied. But at the same time, I was hopeful because they were here at the medical mission and hopeful because they would get the help they needed from Operation Smile. My job as a student volunteer was to play with the children, make them feel comfortable about surgery and, hopefully, bring them some joy during a foreign experience. As the medical mission went on, I learned the different roles the medical volunteers play.Everyone comes together from different parts of the world to do one thing, to give a child a chance at a new beginning and a chance to live life fully. I witnessed how a group of people with so much good in their hearts can take kids who have never smiled and give them a new life they deserve. I was only 15, only a student volunteer. I wasn’t a doctor, but I still felt so happy, so useful. That day changed my entire perception on life. It was stunning to see how great a change the medical volunteers can make in these patient’s lives in just under an hour. As the days of that medical mission went on, I realized just how big of an impact a simple act can make in not just one person’s life, but a whole community. Since that year I have never missed an opportunity to volunteer on a medical mission. I’ve been on 13 missions now, and from each one of them, I have so many stories to tell, so much learned. It is thanks to these experiences that I made the most important decision of my life -- I decided to become a doctor, a plastic surgeon. My dream is to one day volunteer as a surgeon and help those kids get a new start, a new life, the chance to start over.

24 In today's world, many young people dream of being self-employed
In today's world, many young people dream of being self-employed. In addition, people strive to combine volunteer work with entrepreneurship. Do you agree or disagree? Self employment is an interesting and challenging lifestyle. A lot of people want to help make the world a better place, through volunteer work, service trips, or working with a non-profit organization. As a result, more and more successful entrepreneurs are looking for ways to combine “doing good” with profit. First of all, self employment offers many benefits. The main advantage is that one can choose the type of work according to their interests. A self employed person can manage his working hours on his own and can work at his own pace. This not only allows independence, but encourages business owners to complete every task carefully and with 100% effort. Second of all, successful entrepreneurs earn huge salaries while affecting a major portion of the population. Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook is a primary example. But being a successful entrepreneur is not only limited to creating “social networking” websites. Some entrepreneurs have even managed to combine a successful business with the idea of “giving back to the community.” Many successful entrepreneurs volunteered or performed community service first, and used these ideas to help humanity. For example, Heather Hasson of “FIGS USA”, a clothing company, graduated from Oxford Business School and combines “for-profit entrepreneurship with volunteer work and social entrepreneurship”. During her business school studies, Heather volunteered in Africa and met children who were unable to attend school because they lacked a school uniform. Heather decided to start her own clothing company “FIGS”. For every classy necktie FIGS sells, a child in Tanzania or Kenya gets a free school uniform. Thus to conclude, I believe that the entrepreneurial track can definitely change lives. International volunteering and community service are never a waste of time. As we have seen, by reading, researching, attending workshops, conferences and spending your time with motivated and interesting people, these are the keys which help make someone a successful leader, and hence, a successful entrepreneur. 24

25 Present a written argument or case to an educated reader with no specialist knowledge of the following topic: The idea of having only one career is becoming old fashioned. Nowadays with entrepreneurship, globalization and the internet, the new trend is to combine entrepreneurship with your interests and eventually turn it into a career. Use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and with relevant evidence. It is believed that focusing on a single career is out of date these days. The new trend is that people are becoming more and more interested in entrepreneurship, and are trying to turn it into a full-time career. I completely agree with this point of view. First of all, it is a fact that most people in the past were loyal to their company, focused on one career and remained there until retirement. However, now with globalization and modern technology, most people have turned modern day challenges into profitable opportunities. For example, the founders of uber.com used a simple problem to create a brilliant opportunity. On a snowy Paris evening in 2008, the founders of the company had trouble hailing a cab. So they came up with a simple idea-- tap a button on a cell phone, get a ride. Today uber.com is an international company worth over 17 billion USD. This is an excellent example of how regular people can turn everyday challenges into successful business opportunities. Second of all, many successful entrepreneurs also discover how to solve problems by volunteering or performing community service, and then use these ideas to help humanity. For example, John Ferguson, founder of “The Shoe Project”, theshoeproject.org, founded the organization on the simple idea that youth are the principle change makers in the world. For three years, they have helped thousands of children around the world through footwear utilizing the concept of “Youth Social Entrepreneurship”. Consequently, they are continuing to grow their organization and work with youth all around the world to implement community projects. In conclusion, I personally believe that most people these days are not interested in doing the same job for the rest of their life. Technology and globalization have given us opportunities our ancestors never had. By doing internships, attending business conferences, volunteering etc., people are exposed to problems and can then discover possible solutions. Hence, this is how entrepreneurship begins for most people, and eventually becomes a very successful lifelong career. 25

26 A lot of people want to help make the world a better place, through volunteer work, service trips, or working with a non-profit. However, more and more social entrepreneurs are looking for ways to combine “doing good” with profit. What is your opinion ? Give reasons to support your answer In today's world, many young people dream of becoming entrepreneurs. The key point here is that volunteering gave her the business idea. If she did not volunteer, she would never have thought of the idea in the first place. 26

27 Some people say that self employment is better than a job in a company or an institution. What is your opinion? Give reasons to support your answer In today's world, many young people dream of becoming entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurship is an interesting and challenging risk, which many people consider superior to working in a company. In my point of view, I feel that becoming an entrepreneur is a risk worth taking. Nevertheless, many people fear entrepreneurship as it demands special skills, experience, patience and determination. On the one hand, self employment offers many benefits. The main advantages are that one can choose the type of work according to their own interests. A self employed person can manage their working hours, and may work at their own pace. Moreover, successful entrepreneurs can earn huge salaries and have greater opportunities to expand their company quickly. But with all these advantages, self employment first requires overcoming business fears and the risk of failure A potential entrepreneur should have wise decision and risk taking abilities to run a business successfully. For example, Tory Burch, founder and CEO of ToryBurch LLC Fashion, is a primary example. She admits the road to success was not easy and spent several years working for different fashion designers to gain experience. In fact, there were very difficult times she wanted to give up. With perseverance and patience however, Tory Burch succeeded as an entrepreneur, and is now helping people all over the USA become entrepreneurs as well On the other hand, working in a company offers regular monthly paychecks, various bonuses and incentives. An individual need not worry about the risks involved in a traditional startup. In addition, a salaried job offers a sense of security and routine work for a defined number of hours everyday. Generally speaking, a “normal job” basically offers a “low-risk” opportunity to gain experience and to save money for future ventures. Nevertheless, great achievements have never come with easy or routine work. A 9am -to- 5pm lifestyle is not part of the deal when you’re an entrepreneur Thus to conclude, I believe entrepreneurship and self employment are more worthwhile than working in a company. Nevertheless, an individual should spend some years in a 'normal' job to first gain experience and gather finances. Entrepreneurship is not an easy dream to achieve, but for the majority of people, it is definitely a risk worth taking. 27

Describe a person from the news that you would like to speak with. Please say: – Who is the person? – How did you hear about this person? – Why is he/she in the news? That's a very interesting question. I never really gave it much thought, but it would be a privilege to meet ______, the founder of ____.com. To be honest, I had never even heard of his website before, nor was I even interested in entrepreneurship until a friend of mine invited me to a technology event last spring. First of all, there were several speakers at the event from around the world, including ____. This entrepreneur delivered an outstanding presentation in both English and _____ to the entire crowd. In addition, his knowledge and charisma left a very positive impression on me. You could tell he truly cared about helping others become successful entrepreneurs by his passion and body language. Overall, ____ is a very well-rounded individual – professional, smart, energetic, well educated with a very sharp vision for the future. With his enthusiasm and skills, I can tell that he will be one of the great young leaders in the future. Therefore, It would truly be an honor to speak with ______, and learn more from such a brilliant entrepreneur.

31 IELTS Speaking Test | A goal you hope to achieve.
My goal at the moment is to gain admission to New York University. The New York University (NYU) Entrepreneurial Institute fosters a University-wide startup ecosystem that encourages multi-disciplinary collaboration, accelerates innovation, and cultivates the next generation of startup leaders. Consequently, students from around the world choose to go to NYU based on the support they receive from successful entrepreneurs at NYU. Since I have always held international aspirations and am very interested in technology, entrepreneurship, and international volunteer opportunities, NYU is a perfect fit. First of all, I’ve been planning and working towards this goal for the last couple of years. I have been trying to build up my CV since I was 13. For example, since I have a strong interest in healthcare, I have been volunteering at a local hospital on the weekends. In addition, I tutor students in my High School in writing and composition. As a result, my teachers are willing to write me strong letters of recommendation which will help me gain admission to such a top University. Second of all, my dream is to volunteer with Operation Smile before I graduate from High School this year. Operation Smile is a non-profit international medical organization which provides free surgeries to children with cleft palates and cleft lips all over the world. My friend went on an international mission last summer and said it was the experience of a lifetime. Finally, completing the IELTS test is one of the requirements as part of the NYU application process. Therefore, it is essential I earn a respectable score on the test as soon as possible. Hence, I am studying for this exam almost everyday after-school at my local library. Furthermore, as I am very eager to begin my college career, I plan on entering the NYU “Pre- College” program this summer to provide me with important academic skills. In conclusion, I am now dedicating my time and energy towards achieving these goals. Becoming a volunteer with Operation Smile, and then a student at NYU, are experiences which will help me mature quickly and become forward thinking. I realize the challenges ahead, nevertheless, the fire burns in me to fulfill my dreams and become a part of the New York University community this summer 2017.
