2. Short history
The John Butler rio was formed in Fremantle in1998 by the lead guitarist and vocalist, John Butler. The band consisted of Jason Mcgann on drums, and Gavin Shoesmith on basses. In 2009 the band shifted and Nicky Bomba took over as drums and Byron Luiters on basses. The band's second studio album, Three, reached the top 30 in the Australian album charts and achieved platinum sales. The band's following albums: Sunrise Over Sea, Grand National and April Uprising all debuted at the number one position on the Australian album charts, with all three albums reaching platinum sales. The band's releases since 2002 have been marketed independently by Jarrah Records, which John Butler co-owns.

3. Style of Music
John Butler Trio sing many different genres and styles of music. The main genres they sang were acoustic, indie rock, bluegrass and roots rock. The band play bass, guitar and drums. Although, the lead singer butler, says “My style doesn’t really fit into one genre, my fingerpicking includes bits of Celtic, folk, blues, bluegrass, and other styles, and the acrylic nails allow me to use my index finger as a flat-pick. I continuously swap between fingerpicking, flatpicking, double-thumbing, and other techniques, and, at any point, I also have the option of changing the sound from acoustic to full-on distorted Marshall tones.” the singer’s main instrument is an 11 string guitar. The band’s styles include a bit of rock riffing, up-tempo dance grooves, New Orleans funk, lilting reggae rhythms, rolling 6/8 balladry, plucky bluegrass motifs and bluesy slide sweeps.

4. Influences On Music Butler at a one age listened to bands like,
G. love, The Beastie Boys, De La Soul, and a lot of other people who fused music together to form a new style. Although he is influenced by reggae, indie rock, bluegrass and country he doesn’t always play by the traditional accompaniment. When he was writing the song funky tonight he was influenced by the off beat accents of ska. So he blended the two forms together.

5. Distinguishing features
Unlike kiss, John Butler Trio don’t have any crazy dress ups or drum kits at gigs. The only distinguishing feature that john butler trio have is the lead singers hair. He had dread locks that came past his shoulders and well below his chest. These dread locks took him up to 5 years to fully grow but early last year he pulled out the scissors and snipped away till there was nothing. He said “I cut them off because the media weren’t getting the right impression on me, if not the worst. So it was a no brainer to do.

The song, One Way Road, consists of Brian Luiters playing slide chords on bass. He also strums the G, D and C chords, also playing some strong riffs with passion in between the bridge and the chorus. Nicky Bomba owns the drums and keeps a clean rhythmic background to the music. The lead singer finger picks on his 12 string guitar, although he only uses 11 strings.
