Grade 2 Professional Learning Community
Teachers meet weekly to discuss ways to provide instruction to meet the needs of all students Flexible Skills Groups Based on formative assessments given throughout year Students will have opportunities to work in small group settings, focusing on specific tasks

“Fill the Bucket” Students are encouraged to show respect, use manners, be kind, be helpful, be honest, and put effort in their work Rewards for a “full bucket” may include extra recess, pajama day, hat day, stuffed animal day etc…

Reading Goals for Second Graders
Good readers… Engage in deep thinking through accountable talk with their peers predict what will happen next ask questions as they read clarify what they don’t know (words or ideas) summarize what they have read make connections read for fluency

Reading Guided Reading groups are based on assessments and needs of students. Multiple opportunities throughout the day for reading (guided reading, shared reading, independent reading, read alouds). Comprehension strategies are stressed as well as fluency of text. Students are expected to read minutes a day at home.

2nd Grade Comprehension
What is the most important event from the story and why? What is the author trying to tell or teach us? Story mapping or retell of a story (character, setting, problem, events, and solution). Understanding Main Idea How to locate information and explain your thinking Both non-fiction and fiction text are used
