German Unification 1871 Early History
-Before 1860, there was no Germany, only independent states with their own kings. -Prussia was the strongest German state Unification Leaders -Prussian King William I & Otto von Bismarck* planned to unify all German states into one nation. -Bismarck used “Blood & Iron*” (War) to achieve unification. Obstacles to unification -many European neighbors were threatened by a powerful, united Germany. -Bismarck ordered 3 wars to unite all German states under one Kaiser* (emperor). -After victory in the Franco-Prussian War, Germany comes into existence. -France, who lost the war also lost rich territories like Alsace & Lorriane & had to pay reparations* (war damages) to Germany
