From the President The Governor’s Chronicle
Thomas Nelson, Jr. Chapter, SAR From the President Greeting Compatriots, I am pleased to report to the membership that the Thomas Nelson Jr. Chapter has been active and on course since the June meeting. The Joint Grave Marking ceremony with Virginia Society War of 1812 was held June 20th. The ceremony was attended by forty people, and the weather was perfect. The VASSAR and 1812 Society provided color guard and musket salute. The Yorktown fife and drum delighted all with music and a VMI cadet performed Taps. It was great day! Compatriots’ Gerald Runyan and Ken Wood did a great job putting the event together. Sam Endicott was able to get the event in the Daily Press. This kind of press is hard to come by and resulted in a potential new member and increased turn out. Eight wreaths were presented at the ceremony. Thanks to Gerald, Ken, Sam, and all the chapter members who attended and helped out. In July the Chapter participated in the Yorktown 4th of July Parade, it was a hot day. Thank you to Ken Wood, Walt Neville, and my son Thayer who came out to parade the Chapter Colors. The July Bingo game was the following Monday and a good time was had by all. I would like to thank Gary Hodges Everett Feldt, and Walt Neville who helped out at the event. As I said we are on course. During the September chapter meeting we will be recognizing the First Responders of Isle of Wight County and have a presentation of Isle of Wight’s history by two of the county’s history heavy hitters, Tom Finderson and Albert P. Burckard. All of this and a new location for the meeting! See you at Smithfield Station, it will be well worth the drive. With October comes the celebration of Yorktown Day on Monday the 19th. We will join the Yorktown Day Association to mark the 234th Anniversary of the Victory at Yorktown. Events start at 8:45am; I hope to see you there! Check the SAR afield in the newsletter for other events this fall. Several of our Compatriots' are filling multiple committee positions and are ready to share the wealth. If you have some time and are willing to help out the Good Citizen committee, and Flag committee positions are vacant and not very demanding. If you are interested send me an , call or speak with me at the Chapter meeting. You’re most humble Servant, R. Bruce Meyer Page Four November 2015 Edition

Thomas Nelson, Jr. Chapter, SAR The Governor’s Chronicle September 8th SAR chapter meeting (Social 6:30 PM, Cash Bar - Meeting 7:00 PM) The speakers for our chapter meeting will be Tom Finderson and Albert P. Burckard. For the past 10 years, Finderson has been intent on knowing the life of Col. Josiah Parker, a man whose story, Finderson says, has been kept only by history-minded stalwarts within Isle of Wight and the Parker family. Finderson has pored over the correspondence of Revolutionary War officers, scouring for mention of Parker or for letters he wrote. He has put his hands in the soil of Parker's old plantation, Macklesfield, in Carrollton, in an attempt to find the "lost" Parker family cemetery. Here are just a few of Burckard’s community service titles - Historic Fort Huger Committee Historic Fort Boykin committee, Tour guide for the Isle of Wight County Courhouse, Fort Huger and Carrollton Nike-Ajax missile site, Gravesite Survey Task force site coordinator Isle of Wight County Historic society. Burckard portrays four different characters from Isle of Wight County history. A Civil War correspondent at Fort Huger, Francis Marshall Boykin, owner of the 18th-century Boykin's Tavern John Sinclair, a Revolutionary War privateer, and sometimes Thomas Pierce, sheriff of Isle of Wight County in 1762.
