1 The Respiratory System
Lungs Organs in which gas exchange takes place Muscle called diaphragm controls lung size (bottom of ribs)

2 Air flow follows a path Nose Enter
Nostrils lead to nasal passages that contain: a. mucus membranes- make snot b. cilia (hairs)- trap stuff c. capillaries- warm up air 2. Pharynx throat

3 3. Larynx Also called voice box (vocal cords) Epiglottis blocks opening to prevent choking

4 4. Trachea Also called the windpipe Rings of cartilage keep it open Lined with cilia (trap)

5 Found at the end of the trachea where it splits into two
5. Bronchi Found at the end of the trachea where it splits into two Cilia and mucus (trap) Bronchi bronchial tubes  bronchioles  alveoli YouTube - The respiratory system 6. Alveoli Small grape like sacs One cell thick Surrounded by capillaries (diffusion of gases)

6 Know the Pathway

7 The Science of Breathing
Divide into two parts: Breathing Gas exchange

8 Controlled by medulla (brain) and levels of Carbon Dioxide in blood
Breathing Controlled by medulla (brain) and levels of Carbon Dioxide in blood Air goes in and out of the lungs Inhale- ribs up and out, diaphragm down Exhale- ribs and diaphragm relax

9 2. Exchange a. External- exchange in lungs

10 Internal- exchange in cells
YouTube - Respiration 3D Medical Animation

11 Respiratory Disorders
Asthma- allergic reaction to something resulting in closed airways Bronchitis- inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes Emphysema- scar tissue in alveoli
