Katzenbach’s mission Provide Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students with a comprehensive education in an English and American Sign Language Bilingual environment that prepares students for post secondary education or a career upon graduation. Encourage and foster a love of learning with high expectations and development of the whole student through academic, emotional, social, cultural, career, residential and extracurricular activities. Develop effective communication skills in students through the proficient use of American Sign Language and English to ensure that students reach their maximum linguistic potential. Promote student achievement by setting high expectations in a safe environment. Involve parents, families, students, staff, school districts, the Deaf community and the community at large to assist students to become productive members of our society. Prepare students to become lifelong learners who strive to fulfill their academic, personal, and career goals.

3 Overview of Katzenbach
N.J.A.C. 6A:21, Marie H. Katzenbach School for the Deaf Overview of Katzenbach Established in 1883, in accordance with state law. Serves auditorily impaired (Deaf and Hard-of Hearing) students from 3 to age 21. Approximately 80% of the students are multiply- disabled. 104 students total are enrolled in the Early Childhood Program, Elementary School, Middle School, High School and Behavioral Support Program and 30 of those students are residential. Staff include a superintendent, business administrator, building principals, counselors, social worker, audiologist, behavior consultant, speech/language pathologist, teachers, teaching assistants, personal assistants (for students who need them), residential staff, housekeepers, buildings and grounds workers, cafeteria employees.

14 Revised N.J.A.C. 6A:21-1.2 Definitions
N.J.A.C. 6A:21, Marie H. Katzenbach School for the Deaf Revised N.J.A.C. 6A: Definitions “Marie H. Katzenbach School for the Deaf” or “Katzenbach School” means the State-operated residential and day education facility that provides instruction for auditorily impaired students in the following areas: early intervention, preschool through high school, and vocational education. “Residential student” means a student who [does not arrive] boards at the Katzenbach School [at the beginning of each] Monday through Thursday during the school [day and does not leave the Katzenbach School at the end of each school day] year. New N.J.A.C. 6A: Definitions “Student” means an auditorily impaired (deaf or hard-of-hearing) person of suitable age and capacity for instruction and services, who is a legal resident of the State and not over 21 years of age.

All [applicants, ages three through 21,] students shall be classified, in accordance with N.J.S.A. 18A:46-8 and as defined in N.J.A.C. 6A:14-3.5, as auditorily impaired, preschool-disabled, or [multiply-disabled] multiply disabled with an auditory deficit [in accordance with N.J.S.A. 18A:46-8 and as defined in N.J.A.C. 6A:14-3.5] . New N.J.A.C. 6A:21-2.3 All student records shall be maintained in accordance with N.J.A.C. 6A:

Revised N.J.A.C. 6A:21-3.1(a)2 (a) The sending district board of education shall apply for a student's admission to the Katzenbach School [The sending district board of education shall submit] by submitting a completed application form that includes: 2. Copies of the student’s individualized education program (IEP), and other supporting documentation as determined and requested by the Katzenbach School. Revised N.J.A.C. 6A:21-4.1 [Appeals] A student denied admission to Katzenbach School, or his or her parent or guardian, may seek to initiate a due process hearing in accordance with N.J.A.C. 6A: All appeals regarding the chapter’s rules [of this chapter] by a party other than a student, or his or her parent or guardian, shall be made in writing to the Commissioner of Education in accordance with N.J.A.C. 6A:3-[1.3]1.2 to 1.17.
