How do I know if this is the right major for me?!
According to the National Athletic Training Association…. Athletic Trainers are highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.

Science! Health Care Professional NOT a personal trainer
Competent decision maker Work well in high stress situations Non Traditional working hours Many students ask the question “how do I know if I’m in the right major”? To answer that question, it helps to research and learn more about the athletic training career. Athletic Training is a science based field, specifically focusing on anatomy and physiology. Students are required to earn a B- or higher in A&P. Athletic Trainers are Health care professionals. Students should be interested in the medical field and helping others prevent, diagnose and treat injuries. Athletic Training is not for students looking to physically train athletes for competitions. Athletic Trainers need to be confident in their decision making skills, as the well-being of others depends on them. Athletic Trainers should also function well in high stress situations. Students in athletic training should expect non traditional working hours. While in clinicals, students will attend practices and competitions for the teams they are assigned to. These may be early mornings, afternoons or evenings. Clinicals may require the student to commit their time during weekends, holidays and beyond the academic school year. Everything sound good?

If you are…. Back Up Plan Not Accepted Accepted
I’m waiting to find out if I’ll be accepted. Now what? Stay in Athletic Training Major Change to a new major Take classes in fall & spring for major and/or add a minor If you are…. Not Accepted Apply again the following year Accepted Because Athletic Training is a major that requires application & admission, all students are advised to have a back-up plan. An academic advisor can meet with you to discuss your options in detail. Students generally have 2 options for a back up plan. All students are advised to register for fall classes according to their back up plan. If you are sure that your goal is to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training, your back-up plan may be to continue in the athletic training major. In this case, you may continue to take courses that apply to the major…or you may decide to add a minor to your degree and take courses for that. Then you may reapply for the program the following year. Please be aware that if and when you are accepted to the program, it will still be three years to complete the required coursework. A second option for a back-up plan would be to change your major to fit a different career path. You may decide to pursue Athletic Training later or other interests entirely. Once you find out the results of your application, the Athletic Training faculty will assist you in changing your schedule if needed. Faculty will advise you on what classes to Add/Drop Keep schedule as-is. Go with back-up Plan
