10 Complexities of the Conversation
Individualized issue Complex issue considering multiple variables Emotional consequences Role as organizational member Motivation to achieve “balance” Individual Motivation Organizational Motivation Our field has a high ethic of care

11

12 Lessons Learned “Balance” is an elusive concept
Balancing individual needs vs. organizational needs Frameworks and definitions can be restrictive

13 Lessons Learned Conflicting/Complementary Goals
Supervisor’s role is not to make sure you are happy in life Supervisor’s role is to support you in order for you to be a productive team member Employee seeks to be an advocate for self in order to satisfy my position requirements Satisfaction vs. productivity

14

15 Implementation Strategies
Organizations need to be agile and authentic Who are we and how do we operate? Supervisors are critical to the conversation Mediators between employees and organizations Training is needed to: Identify organizational values Articulate organizational values Facilitate meaningful conversation

16 Implementation Strategies
Less about policy and more about developing individual professionals Individual approaches are based on personal values: How and when do values change? How do you create an organization with flexible boundaries that can adapt (within reason) to the individual’s needs? How do you communicate an organization’s flexibility?

17 Implementation Strategies
Self-Awareness and Understanding What do you need in order to be happy? How can you advocate for those needs? What do you do when you are unhappy? Do you take responsibility for the resolution of your feelings? Are you owning the behavior or are you placing the unhappiness on your supervisor?

18

19 Recommended Next Steps
Self-awareness - you really need to know what you need Ask yourself if you are asking too much of your employer Explore the employee-employer relationship Evaluate the expectations your employer has of you Recognize that no one is going to do this for you
