End of Year 1 Expectations and Assessment 2017/2018 Thursday 21st September 2017
2015/16 was the first year that the new national curriculum was tested at the end of year 2. This is the second year we have carried out these assessments – and we know a lot more about them than we did last year!!!!!

Year 1 Assessment Timetable
September- Baseline assessment through observations Autumn - Reading, writing and maths assessment through observations Spring- Maths test papers introduced including spelling, grammar and reading Summer- As Spring assessments We will carry out the National Phonics Screening in June 2018. Already carried out initial baseline tests and teachers have shared next steps with you for your child’s learning. A further set of assessments will be carried out in November and then a MOCK of the real tests using last years papers in January. The real tests will be delivered to school, stored securely and opened on the day of the tests! So what sort of things will your child be asked to do/answer. The tests are aimed to demonstrate their understanding in relation to the expectations we have shared with you.

What will be assessed and how?
Reading comprehension – 2 reading tests and teacher assessment judgements Grammar and punctuation – 2 tests Spelling – 2 tests Maths – 2 tests (one arithmetic and one reasoning) and teacher assessment judgements Writing – teacher assessment by looking at a range of examples of each child’s writing Science – teacher assessment by looking at work in children’s books and observations of children in lessons No strict timings but generally: Reading 1 – 30 minutes, Reading 2 – 40 minutes - The new reading test has a greater emphasis on the comprehension elements of the new curriculum. G and P – 20 minutes - The new grammar, punctuation and spelling test has an emphasis on technical aspects of grammar. Spelling – 15 minutes Maths – Paper 1 – 20 minutes Paper 1: arithmetic assesses pupils’ confidence and mathematical fluency with whole numbers, place-value and counting. Paper 2: reasoning assesses pupils’ mathematical fluency, problem solving and reasoning skills. - Paper 2 – 35 minutes -
