Early life Bessie Lee Pitman was born somewhere in Florida, various reports claiming that she was an orphan and raised by a foster family. Raised in poverty in FL, her first job was sweeping floors at a beauty salon in order to buy a pair of shoes. From Florida, she went to NY to expand her career in cosmetology. Various trips back and forth between Miami and New York brought her to Floyd Odlum, millionaire, who she eventually married.

Year Honored: First woman aviator to break the sound barrier. A leader and pilot, Cochran held many speed, distance and altitude records. She led the Women’s Air Force Service Pilots during World War II, becoming the first woman to pilot a bomber across the Atlantic Ocean.
