1 Homework C-1 due tomorrow
Next current events article due Monday, November 14.

2 Aim #1: How has China’s geography affected the development of Chinese civilization?
Do Now: Analyze the map of China in front of you. Based on our previous discussions of geography, list three predictions you have about how the geographical features in this civilization helped to influence its development.

3 I. The Rivers of China Huang He (Yellow) River → 2nd longest river in China, located in the north. Takes its name from the yellow covered silt (loess) it deposits. Earliest Chinese civilizations arose here. “China’s Sorrow”

4 I. The Rivers of China B. Yangtze River → Longest river in China (5th longest in world) C. Xi Jiang (West) River → Major cities of southern China are found along this river. D. Majority of Chinese live in the east, near these rivers.

5 II. Natural barriers Northern and western frontiers are covered by mountains and deserts. This will influence China’s development in many ways: - Isolated from other civilizations. - Ethnocentrism - Xenophobia - China dubs itself “The Middle Kingdom”

6 Do you agree or disagree with this law?
Continuum Activity! There are currently 120,000 illegal immigrants in the state of Alabama (out of 11 million in the whole country). It costs taxpayers in the state of Alabama a quarter of a billion dollars to educate, medicate and incarcerate these immigrants. However, these immigrants also pay taxes and often perform important jobs (such as farm workers). In 2011, Alabama passed a new law that tried to force these immigrants out of the state by: Requiring schools to verify the citizenship of students. Allowing police to pull over anyone they suspect of being an illegal immigrant. If that person can’t produce ID proving that they are a citizen, they could be arrested and held in jail without bail. Do you agree or disagree with this law?

7 Continuum Activity President Obama announced last year that he wants to allow 10,000 Syrian refugees to enter the country. These people are fleeing a horrific civil war in their country. However, many politicians like Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and New York congressman Peter King oppose this because they worry that terrorist groups like ISIS and Al-qaeda will plant terrorists within the group of 10,000 people coming in. Do you agree with Congressman King that we should not allow the 10,000 Syrians to come in? Why or why not?

8 Concluding Question Based on what we talked about today, do you think the United States is becoming a xenophobic country in 2016? Why or why not?
