Lesson 6-3: Dividing Polynomials
Ch 6 (6-3 & 6-4) Portfolio Page Algebra 2 Lesson 6-3: Dividing Polynomials --To divide using long & synthetic division –-To use the Remainder Theorem Long division: To divide polynomials using long division, follow the long division algorithm. Write the result in fractional form. Examples: Synthetic division: Synthetic division can be used only when the divisor is of the form x - a Examples: Use synthetic division and the Remainder Theorem to evaluate each function: Remainder Theorem If a polynomial of degree 1 or greater is divided by x – a, the remainder is P(a). (This means the remainder is equal to the value of the polynomial when a is substituted in for x)

Lesson 6-4: Solving Polynomial Equations
--To solve polynomial equations Solving by graphing – graph the function and find its x-intercepts or zeros. (shows only real number solutions) (2nd CALC/ZERO) Solve by factoring a Sum or Difference of Cubes Examples: Solve by factoring by Grouping Solve Quartic Equations by factoring for quartic equations that have the form of a quadratic, factor it as a quadratic Sum and Difference of Cubes a3 + b3 = (a + b)(a2 – ab + b2) *signs: +, - , + a3 – b3 = (a – b)(a2 + ab + b2) *signs: -, +, +
